Cold steel recon 1 tanto vs clip point ? Looking for a good edc knife . I don’t want the tip to break.

Well, I own a spear point (it is my favorite shape) and that would be my recommendation.

If I had to choose tanto or clip point, I'd choose tanto. That nature of the tanto design is for poking, ie. a strong(er) tip.

I will echo what jbmonkey jbmonkey said, try not to pry stuff with a folding knife.

Tanto style blades have never really impressed me.
I think that a good clip -point is far more versatile.

Actually neither tip will break even if you pry mildly. I have both because they are dirty cheap, so I recommend both.

Buy which ever looks better to you and just use it. Don't over think it. Better yet, buy both, or all 3. It's a solid value if the handle works well with you hand as heavily contoured handles can be polarizing for comfort. If you've used both blade shapes, just pick which one you like.

Personally, I choose the clip point as I like the shape more. I had a spear point for a year or two and loved it and I finally got around to ordering a clip point for the added pointiness (shows up tomorrow). I also like the belly as tantos generally don't have any. However, I recently picked up a fully serrated tanto bladed knife and I have to admit, it's a destroyer of plastic, but sucks on cardboard compared to a non-serrated edge.

If you're breaking tips off of knives, you're doing it wrong. And then, even if it happens, regrind it and keep using it. The only tips I tend to break are from product testing and tanto tips are an easy regrind for pretty much any broken tip knife.

The only knife I really actually worried about breaking the tip off from is a kershaw leek, and that baby is super duper thin compared to the recon 1. Wharncliff and a hollow grind doesn't leave much metal out there but it slices better than most knives out there because of it.

I have the clip point and IMO you would have to really try to break the tip, it’s sturdy. Tantos are great if they have the right angle, the recon tanto however has a horrible angle, better suited for buttering toast than piercing through anything lol

It comes down to use and looks. I'd personally get the tanto tip if I didn't already have a tanto tip blade in my collection, but when it comes to sharpening you kind of have to treat it like sharpening two separate blades. The most important thing for a hard work knife is getting the one that is most applicable to what you'll be using the knife to do. Do you need pokey precision and sliciness of the clip point, or much more tip strength of the tanto for driving it through heavier materials?

Tanto is my middle name, so tanto :^)
But other types are good too
Buy both, use, you will know someday ...

Tanto for strong tip clip point for all others. If you want a tanto with a thick strong tip get the SR1 in S35VN with the green handles. I believe it's 3'16's thick, good luck.

If they still do the tanto in a hollow grind that may be something to consider - the hollow tanto’ s are actually better slicers than the flat ground clip/spear recon’s in my experience, I’d love to get a recon tanto but there are too many 4-max scouts to buy…. 😎
