Cold Steel Super/Ready Edge?

I just recently viewed the Cold Steel "More Proof" DVD and was thinking about buying a small fixed blade that I could wear around my neck. I already own the "Urban Pal" which is a small push dagger type knife that works well when hung around the neck. I don't carry it for self defense, mainly using it for small cutting tasks. This had made me wonder about the Super Edge and Ready Edge knives that Cold Steel makes. My main question about these two is what makes them different? They look like the same knife except for the sheaths. One comes with a plastic zytel sheath and the other a more "kydex" looking one. Anyone have comments on these two knives?

thanks in advance,

Mike

I have one of the Para Edge Tantos, and while the knife itself is nice (I could do without the part. serrations), the only real problem I have with it it the sheath. Specifically, the knife sometimes falls out of the sheath after it's been knocked around some! I don't know about you, but I don't want a small knife loose under my shirt! I'm pretty sure the problem is one of design and how the handle and sheath lock together (or don't). I currently wear a CS Mini Culloden everyday, with no problems of the knife coming loose from the sheath, but it has a deeper pocket and better handle shape to mold the sheath around for retention. (I also like the whole Sgian Du/ Scottish thing!) The Super Edge looks to have a similar short, wide pocket for retention like the Para Edge, while the Ready Edge has a button release on the sheath like the Mini Pal (it's main difference between it and Urban Pal, after being shorter by .5 in.).

It's up to you. If you feel you could get used to using that feature, then go for it. For myself, I prefer not having some little thing which might hang up when I'm trying to pull out the knife, possibly in a hurried, high-stress situation. On the other hand, I still want the sheath to securely hold the knife, even inverted. Hence, the MiniCulloden is in, the ParaEdge is out. The only other Kydex sheathed knife I own is a Fallkniven S1, and it stays snuggly in its sheath until I'm ready to use it. (My wife has a CS Recon Tanto, but it stays at home, since the novelty of carrying it IWB wore off for her.)

For an inexpensive, inoffensive, utility-useful neck knife, I am very fond of the Outdoor Edge Wedge and Wedge II. I like them quite a bit better than the Cold Steel ParaEdge and Ready Edge I used to own. I'd also look at the small A.G Russell pieces like the Bird & Trout, Hunter's Scalpel, and Woodswalker.

Nick,

Thanks for your reply. I already own a Wedge and a Woodswalker. I think the Woodswalker is one of the best values out there. I have a Ready Edge and a Para Edge coming in from a trade so I'll get to test them soon.
