I've been looking for a new knife for awhile. I want a strong knife that can be a edc knife and a relatively fast opener. I want it to be a knife I can carry in case of an emergency. And preferably below $100. Besides the cost how will the Ti lite stand up? Or is there a tactical folder that will fill the role better?

Get a Spyderco Endura 4 Wave.
Alwyas retails for less than $100, waves open FAST, good solid lock, and better steel than the Cold Steel knife.
Looks less "weapony" too, so the cops won't bug you just for carrying it(in most places).
It will do all that you want, it's fun to play with, and it has a good warranty behind it.

Yes yes and yes! It's a much more useful design as well.

Patriot, I'd pass over the Ti Lite, for now at least. Get it down the road when ya don't need another knife but just want another "toy" or something to add to your collection. I give it big points for styling but lets face it, it's a dagger and it's use is therefore limited as an all around EDC.
The endura 4 wave is a good choice as are some other Spydercos. As are some Kershaws, Benchmades, even certain Cold Steeles. Another good choice to look at in that price range is Lone Wolf Harsey T-1. They can be found for around 90$.
There really are alot of good choices but I would definitely put the ti lite on hold.
Do you have a knife store nearby. Or perhaps a gun store that carries knives? Try and make it to a gun show if you can. Do alot of hands on and talking to dealers/vendors if you can. Okay, I'll stop running on now that I probably have you all confused. Good luck.

For right around $100 your choices are very good.
Lots of great Spyderco knives (I recommend the Military).
Or Benchmade has several nice $100 knives... Like the 710.

Notice how I skipped Cold Steel knives? Yeah, I don't like their folders. But I do like their fixed blades. (I love the Trailmaster)

If you're really looking for a quality, functional EDC, get serious. Get the Military. If you're really looking for something cool and macho that can, in a pinch, cut something, get anything you find attractive and enjoy.

If you had to choose between the Spyderco Military and the Kershaw skyline as your only knife, which would you choose? Why?

I like Kershaw and the Skyline is a really nice, clean design, but the Military is a pretty regular carry of mine. It's got a good big blade that's sharp, not bulky, the lock is very reliable, the handle is oversized, which for me means just-right, the whole knife is relatively flat/thin, so it carries unobtrusively. It's tip-down, which works best for me: I carry it in my back right pocket against the outside seam. I can go for days carrying just the Millie, including some food prep.

I have a Ti-Lite, and I would recommend against buying it. I certainly wouldn't buy one again.

As others have stated, the Endura 4 Wave would be a good choice. I, myself, have a D4 Wave, and it has been in my pocket for 8 months now.

the ti-lite isnt too bad. i like mine.

some knives i really like are

benchmade nitrous striker
emerson mini cqc 7
spyderco native
kershaw zing
kershaw ram
cold steel scimitar

Out of those two, the Military. I think it's just a much better build and more efficient at what it does. It'll probably outlast you.

However, if you want to go Kershaw I think the one that would be right up your alley (based on your description in your first post) is the RAM. Check this one out and maybe read around the Kershaw forum on this site to see what their opinion of it is. At around 60$ you'd have money left toward another knife purchase.;)

Also, you could hit the Spyderco forum for more feedback/info on the Mil.

The Cold Steel 4-inch Ti-Lite is a beautiful, easy to carry knife with a decent blade steel. It excels in opening mail, packages and, when necessary, bad guys. You can debark wood with it and it penetrates almost anything. The blade's lack of belly will make some cutting chores difficult, but nothing I routinely do would be affected.

In short, it's a nice little knife that's easily carried and it appeals to some, me included. And if you ever need another blade configuration, you'll likely keep the Ti-Lite because it is a charming, handy tool. Having said that, there are knives that I find are better suited to everyday carry. The 4-inch (large) Voyagers are splendid EDCs, as is the Recon 1 (a little heavy). Spydercos are always good bets when you find one with a 4-inch blade, and the Byrd Cara Cara with a G10 handle or FRN also are good selections.

The CS Voyager.

There's nothing wrong with the Ti-Lite, but it's not actually a very good utility knife.

There are a bunch of good heavy-duty folders in your price range.

I like mine but I don't carry it anymore but I still do like it but I would get a Spyderco now that I know more about knives, the Ti Lite was my first knife that I ever really EDC'd and it just took off from there.

Ti lite is one of the best knife for SD purpose, it is also a good kubotan... but not the best for ED tasks. Maybe you need 2 knifes.

I would vote against tri lite, for several reasons. Its a poor edc knife which you will mostly like use the knife for versus self defense. Speaking of self defense, its a poor self defense knife if you plan to slash with it, it really has no belly to speak of so you really have to rely more on puncture wound type of technique. "I feel this technique take quick hits at bad guy and back away is probably the safest method around in general" You must also consider that if you use this knife in defensive role chances are you will have to defend yourself in the court room. You be hard press to try to convince people that tri lite is more than a tool to stab people with.

100 dollars goes a long way these days and there are tons of good knives out in the market. I would suggest you buy two knives just in case you lose one etc... so you should be looking for knives in the 50 dollar range. cold steel voyager, spyderco endura, byrd cara cara, various kershaw models, kabar doizer
