Hello,
This is my first visit, I have an older cold steel voyager from 1996 or 1997 (I think) and I am just trying to learn more about it. Seems like there is somewhat of a following for these older Voyagers...
Thank you,
Scott

Welcome, Scott. The older Voyagers are awesome. They pack a lot of blade in a thin, lightweight package that is easy to EDC. The new Voyagers have a lot going for them, including the Tri-ad lock, but I like the look, feel and ease of EDC of the original Voyager.

The 2013 version was new when the pic was taken. I have subsequently slapped a shine on the blade to impress the babes. The old Voyager I kept virginous for a long time. And then I figured, "Powernoodle, why leave this thing unused? Only so my wife's next husband can sell it after I croak?". So I took it out the box and have carried it, though it remains in like-new condition. I am very easy on my blades.

I would love one of the old Vaquero Grandes, or Voyager X2s.

However I have the new pattern Voyager XL in clip point and serrated vaquero pattern, and they're both great knives.

Vaquero Grandes, or Voyager X2s.

I have 2 Vaquero Grandes and carry my X2 VG1 Voyager every day. I just can't warm up to the new Voyages great lock or not. I have carried Voyagers for many years trucking and put them thru all types of abuse out on road and never had a lock fail.

I liked the old ones better too. Thinner and much lighter, no reason to change.

My first quality knife was an xl voyager. i carried it to my wedding, i still have it. I prefere the vg-1 over the aus8 (or 440B by american standards) and although i tri ad is a huge improvement, and the flat grind is more workhorse orineted over the thin hollow grind so thats an understandable change, the voyagers are sentimental to me in their old design simply because it got me into cold steel and quality knives and started my current knife status. Aus8 has .3% less carbon than vg 1 and vg1 has .2% molybdenum whereas aus8 has .2% vanadium instead, but it does have 1% silicone to help grain structure.
