Hi Everyone,

I just ordered a Cold Steel Walkabout in macacauba wood. Does anyone on the forum have one? Any idea of how tough they are?

I have a Hickory Walkabout, had it for years, wish I had more than one, and wish the ferrule stayed put so I didn't have to replace it with a crutch tip.
Did you order yours from Cold Steel? Didn't think they offered the Walkabout anymore.

Yes, I ordered it from Cold Steel. They said it wasn't in their catalog anymore, but they still have a few in stock. They currently have the hickory version on their website. I'm planning to replace the ferrule on mine with a rubber tip so I don't damage my floors.

I got the purple heart. They say the macacauba is about as tough. Which is, very. Pretty heavy, too, a real war club. I had gotten a hickory second a few years ago, which I gave to a neighbor when I got the purple heart. I like them.

Right after I bought the hickory one, I found it was cheaper to make mine own. Helps if you have a wood lathe in your workshop. The shape isn't that hard to turn, and you can easily find the wood stock make one.

Cold Steel also does a pretty poor job on the ferrule, so I replaced it with a SS walking/hiking stick end cap.

Made one out of Lignum Vitae for my father's friend, and that's was a difficult wood to work with. But it was way denser than most of the other tough hardwoods.

Tony-

Do you have a source for that replacemnet tip? My Walkabout's tip fell off about an hour out of the box.

Hi Tony,

Where did you get the wood from? I've been looking for a source of suitable hardwoods, but haven't been able to find one. All I usually find are boards and blocks.

I got mine from here: http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com. It's listed under Projects, then Walking Stick supplies.

I've had good success with http://www.lumberlady.com, and http://www.gilmerwood.com. The lignum vitae I got off Ebay. There's a guy in upstate NY that gets some really good pieces every now and then. Trick is to hold out for the pieces around 36" long and thicker than 1.5". A trick I use is to search for spindle stock.

My walking stick just arrived and I really like it. I plan to replace the brass ferrule with a brass/rubber one to prevent damage to my floors, but other than that its great. It doesn't look like the one in the picture since its sort of a uniform reddish-brown like red oak, but it looks nice and it really dense and solid. I'd hate to get whacked with this thing.

Joe, I don't replace my ferrule, I just push a rubber cane tip over it. On some canes, I use a bit of glue, which means when the rubber wears out, I cut it off, but it keeps it from slipping off meanwhile no matter who I hit with it :D

Thanks for the tip. (No pun intended.) I'll have to try that.
