Just picked up this beaut of a 1911, and was wondering if some of you experts can tell me more about it. Like the pic shows, the gun is a full size 1911, and is marked, "Colt Custom" on the slide. The serial number shown on the other side is SN27160E. Barrel is marked Colt 45 auto NM(which I assume means National Match, since the owners manual also shows that).

The gun is new, never fired in the blue plastic box with all papers, two 8 rd magazines, etc... The owners manual is dated 1995, so I'm guessing the gun is 11 years old. Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Is this gun too valuable to be shooting?

Danbo,

Hate to break the news to you, brother, but that TOTALLY looks like a Caspian slide. Good one, but most likely not factory. Colt has a service, or used to, where you send them the serial number, and some cash, and they tell you what it was like from the factory.

Maybe worth looking into, but if that is a stainless frame, I might be interested!;)

Best Regards,

Steve-O,
Negative brother. Factory gun as it sits. Eliasen(sp?) rear sight, "enhanced" features, looks like a Gold Cup stainless. Colt did soooooo many "Custom" editions that many are not very collectible (despite what you see on gunsamerica/gunbroker etc., sold price, not asking price is what counts) other than being a Colt. "Limited" editions for various distributors, large gunshops, and things like that. Nothing wrong with that though.
Danbo, PM me the price if ya want......I'm doing a little research to give you the particulars right now.
PS- NO gun in my collection is a safe queen. Shoot that thing or send it to me.;) :D
As STeve said, contact Colt. Over the phone, the Custom Shop can sometimes help you out free of charge.

that's the "bee's knees" Dan.
I also agree that you have a stainless Gold Cup. Now go roast some lead.

bout time ya got a 1911! And ya did it the right way.... COLT!

Looks kinda like one of those Chinese imatations to me... If you're the least bit worried, you can send it my way and I can check it out for ya?!?!! ;)

:D Nice score! And like m1marty said - shoot the danged thing! The only way to appreciate that piece!!!

Danbo,
Looks like a NIB, unfired Colt National Match that came out of the "Custom Shop". Like Marty said though,...there were/are soooo many that come out of the Colt "Custom Shop" that Custom is not really a description of a real limited edition. That should not take away from the weapon though. It looks like a very nice piece. I don't have a Blue Book handy, but would guess that the local shops would sell a similar one somewhere in the $800 range. I would not think that it would add or preserve a great deal of value to not shoot it. If you bought it with the intent to sell it in the future and not as a "user" with no real desire to warm it up a bit, then you will probably hold a bit of value by keeping it in the box. I personally have shot everything I own.

Anyway,
looks like a very nice find. Enjoy.
