I just saw this knife, and I think it looks really nice. But I don't know much about it, or the manufacturer. Does anyone own one, or know much about it?

Quality? Where its made? Thanks!

looks very mod-like. i dont know who manufactures it, but as far as i know colt doesnt make their own knives. they buy and stamp their name on them, like smith and wesson.

personnally i dont care fro 440 steel. a little soft and requires resharpening too often.

Thanks for the reply. Hmm, thats kind of a huge thing that the maker is not Colt. Thanks for letting me know. Dang.

What do you mean "mod-like"?

looks like a 'masters of defense' knife. the handle shape and texture, that is.

many companies dont actually manufacture their own knives. they outsource the work to another company, whether for blades, handles, or entire knives, then stamp them and sell them as their own. nothing necessarily wrong with that, but like you said, its good to know what you're getting.

cold steel comes to mind.

Ahh, again, thanks for the info. I would love to know who it is outsourced too, and where it is done. I checked everywhere, and the only thing I came up with is someone selling it on ebay said it is made in Taiwan. Hmm, I hope they are wrong.

if its made in taiwan, colt definitely didnt build/manufacture it. chances are it will be difficult to find the source. i dont think colt does much advertising of knives, at least on their websites. all guns iirc.

They are not. United Cutlery is/was mfg'ng under license. Last I heard, they were going bankrupt.

They do virtually nothing Colt-marked in the US:

Thats too bad. I was stoked on this knife. Thanks for the help. I am still hoping someone says they have it and its the greatest knife ever. haha

By chance, do you know if its true that the Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder is made in Taiwan as well?

Hi. I am sorry, but I had a hard time following what you were saying. Are you saying that they are in fact made in the US?

no. he's saying the ebayer is correct. made overseas by united cutlery, who has gone bankrupt, and sold/licensed under the colt name.

and not gimmick, necessarily, but novelty in the sense they make a lot of stuff with other company names on them. notice the harley knives?

for the same money, spyderco or benchmade make a great product.

Gotcha. Thanks for breaking it down for me. Its too bad. I really liked the look, thought it resembled a Mini Socom.

it does resemble the socom! good eye.

im not saying dont buy it, but know what you are buying. but if you like the socom, then save and get that one. you will be much happier.

You can do much better for the price of the Colt. Check out Spyderco and Benchmade knives. Both companies make excellent knives and they have several folders in the $50 dollar or under category. (Spyderco Delica & Benchmade Steigerwalt NRA model w/micarta handle pictured below)

NOT to derail the subject, Boozoo, but the Steigerwalt NRA has issues.

Good steel, great design, but the model that I own, and reviewed at the Benchmade booth at SHOT last year had side to side play, front to back play, movement of the clip, all over the place, and a very uncomfortable thumbstud.

Not sure which low dollar model to recommend that would be US made, but just wanted to share the info before Applejacks went out and spent his money, only to possibly be unhappy down the line.

i believe this is made in solingen, germany.

The fixed blades are made by Boker in Germany.

The folders are made by Gerber, in the U.S., last I checked.

The fixed blades are done much better, FWIW, the grinds on the folder are washy as hell.

THanks guys. I have the knife, and someone tried to tell me it was made in Taiwan and I was quite surprised.

Truthfully, I buy alot on aesthetics, as no knife I own is a real workhorse. I really liked the way the Colt looked, and thought the brand was pretty unique. haha I guess the socom is what I am gonna buy.

It is a unique knife. It doesn't suck!:D

I own one, and my biggest problem was rust, and not holding a good edge very long.

This knife is not 1/4 the knife that a SOCOM is, though. I have five of them. One of my top 10 production folding knife designs of all time.

The others? Well glad you asked!;)

Al Mar Eagle Talon w/bolsters

Benchmade 710(US Made)

Buck 110, Buck Mayo(US Made)
