Doies anyone out there make a dedicated combat striaght razor?

I already have a dalotn, but im looking for a non auto.

If not are there any locking straight razors (i could just reprofile the edge into a wharncliff).

Also i have heard taht dating as far back as WW1 people ahve been sticking straight razors in there boots for fighting in the trenches. Is this true?

I've seen a link on this forum to a custom knifemaker's site for a locking straight razor. I can't remember the details but somone will come up with it.

You don't want a locking straight razor. The ones I've seen have been crap, and even if they were custom made from good steel, all you've got is a brittle (fragile) blade with no point.

A razor should have a "monkey tang" (that l'il curved thing) for easy one-handed opening, and the deepest cuts are delivered by folding the blade back across your knuckles.

A "lockout" grip (like you seem to want) is best for quick, light, & shallow (1/2" deep) slashes in a face-to-face confrontation. The primary target should be the forehead, with the intent being to temporarilly blind the opponent with his own blood via a non-lethal wound. James Keating would refer to this as a "humanitarian act." :)

Ray Rogers is a maker who has a liner-locking straight razor bladed knife. Most people I know who have them love them. They're also far from being crap.

Real life isn't a movie. As a weapon, a straight razor is a poor choice (no pointy tip). It's made for shaving. The blade is thin, the edge is thinner. A WWI soldier might have kept a straight razor (for shaving) handy just in case, but any sort of knife or bayonet would have been used for actual combat.

I bought one thinking it would be a novel thing to have around, but I can't shave with it. I just don't have the right kinda face for it I guess. I have thought about keeping it around as a weapon, but I don't know what good it would be for me. It is just a kinda keepsake now. I wouldn't mind a locking one though.

As long as you maintain your grip a balisong won't close on you. You need training though if you intend to use a balisong as an SD weapon. More complicated to open under stress. Benchmade makes a trainer balisong.

I am actually very interested in them. I am a proficient balisong user so the idea appeals to me.

That liner locking straight razor seems like the bees knees. I have a normal straight razor and am thinking about shapeing it into a wharncliff. then maybe haveing a pimper over at usn taking a look at it, maybe a Ti handle. I was thinking along the lines of a button lock, so that i could still have the Monkey tang.

There is some Asian made knives that apply a squared off blae to a liner locking design and run for about $10. They utilize more of a standard folder handle as opposed to the traditional straight razer handle. Also the sharpened cutting edge starts immediately. Aside from being a slashing implement, a rzaer has little combat value, and unless you know where to slash, it is definetely not a worthwhile weapon.

I've got one of those, and I like it quite a bit. I didn't buy it as a weapon, though. I always figured that I'd want to be able to both stab and slash with a SD blade.

That is whyi want to turn it into a wharncliff.

And i would slash at the carotid artery. a straight razor cuts so easily it would have little trouble reaching it.

The real drawback is that striaght razors are so thin that they are easily damaged.

Also i wasnt saying i would use it as such, i was just wondering if they made them.

This is what im talking about just non auto. I already hae this knife and i love it, but autos bring up all kind of legal problems.

Well, they're not really "straight razors", but the Spyderco Atlantic Salt and the Spyderco Rescue folders might be what you're looking for.

People seem to ignore SpyderJon's post. RAY ROGERS...really.
His webpage doesn't seem to have any pictures, but I took these from Michael Janich's page (who highly recommended it, btw.)

Now THAT looks a lot better quality than the cheap-o locking 440C "razors" I've seen in the past (i.e., Frost Cutlery, "Caine Cutter II", etc.).

BTW: carotid is a tough target to hit in a face-to-face confrontation with an armed opponent who is expecting it. I hope you wouldn't be thinking of cutting (murdering) someone under other circumstances. The muscles of the arms, chest, and abdomen would likely be a more practical target to start out with -- plus it'll likely stop the fight without a body to explain (if you pop the carotid, you'll be taking a bath -- hard to be "non-descript" and slink away unnoticed when you're covered in blood).

I have straight razors that I use for shaving, but they'd be one of the last things I want to use as a weapon. The edges are very fragile and would chip and break if they were used to slash at someone. I wouldn't also feel comfortable gripping a straight razor to take a slash at someone.

Some of these weapon like straight razors are more knives than true straight razors. They don't appear to be ground as thin and delicate as a real straight razor that is designed for shaving.

That is exactly what i was looking for. Thanks:thumbup:

If you are interested in a fixed blade I would suggest a Perrin Street Cleaver- I have one and like it a lot. They used to be in Lacci Szabo's website.
