I have two CRK one piece knives, a Project I and a Mountaineer II.I was working on filling the handle with survival goodies, when it struck me,What about an emergency compass.I did a search and didn't uncover alot of options.Marbles doesn't sell the mini compasses anymore and apparantly quality was a issue with that product and other mini-compasses from different companies suffered the same problem.Somewhere in my searching there was a suggestion of a SAS Compass imported from England, being sold by Triple Aught.Although,at first I felt they were a little pricey,I decided to order one for the Pro-I just to see if quality was good and to see if it was a good size for the handle cap.I received very quick service from Patrick and was pleasantly suprised by the compasses quality.Size is perfect,Slightly smaller than the inner diameter of cap and leaves room for a narrow bead of silicone around the outer edge.Points perfectly true north, in and out of the cap.Two dots for north, one for south and the dots are luminous.I purchased special marine clear silicone that when cured remains flexible but firm.I filled the cap, installed the compass just below the flush line of the top of cap.Silicone and compass installation came out great and functions perfectly.I was so happy with the compass I just ordered one for my Mountaineer II.I can't vouch for how it will handle impacts such as chopping or hammering on the handle, but it is fairly well cushioned with silicone and appears to be a high quality navigation piece.I feel as an emergency piece of gear,it should function fine for years to come.I just thougth I'd pass this info along to others that may be looking for a compass for their hollow handle knives.Take Care,Ralph

Www.Tripleaughtdesign.com has supposedly got this mini-compass that's the end-all-be-all of mini-compasses. From the dimensions given, it sounds as though it will fit even the smallest size CR screw-on cap. Hope this helps.

Professor.

SAS Compass-16 MM in diameter 5mm thick, smaller than the width of a dime.It fits the large caps fine,It may fit the small too,but I can't vouch for it,since I don't have a small handle cap.

Fifteen years ago, I bought a second hand SAS combat smock (as you did in those days; first purchases once out of recruits were, windproof smock, bergan, boots, brew kit and jungle trousers - issue kit is better now). Sewn into a pocket seam was one of these compasses. Four combat jackets later its now in my Project. I can't think how many washes its been through whilst in the jackets, or what knocks its had in the knife handle, but it still works just fine. It needs a good charge with a torch for the luminosity to work. Its not the fastest to north compass I have. Its a bit small, but then that what it needs to be.

Just thought you might like to know.

Thanks for the info.It is nice to hear about peoples experiences with a product.I'm confident the compass should be an excellent tool to have in an emergency possibly when all I might have with me is my knife.
