I was given this compass from my Fatherinlaw...he is a sailor, so its a nautical compass...I just thought it was kinda cool, and thought you guys might like to see it...it could easily be used on land of course, although it is a bit on the heavy side being solid brass and 3 inches accross. Gene

I like the looks of that type of compass. Always have thanks for posting pics.

That compass is called a pocket transit, it is used a lot by surveyors and artillerymen, very accurate piece of gear. Chris

I believe that they (Stanley London) have a similar compass for surveying that has a pendulum type device on it..this one is intended for nautical use, but I could be wrong. I am interested in learning its use on water, as I am a beginer at Sailing...I was learning on catermarans (spelling?) when I lived in Texas, and was told I was a good student, but since my father inlaw lives in TX and I have moved to MA...it puts a damper on my schooling! My Fatherinlaw is one of the real deal sailors...he is old now (70+) but he has sailed all over the world, and can navigate at sea. A real saltydog that has great stories...he is a German by birth, and lived through the bombings in Berlin as a boy..his story is a long one, full of adventure...I have stayed up late drinking beer and yager, listening to his tales, many times...good stuff. He also has a cabin in the Alps that he says I can use whenever I want!!!! I have only seen photo's!!! I will have to save for a while to go, but I will GO!!! Really awesome mountains, that I would love to hike amongst. Gene

Gunknifenut, check out the Brunton site for pocket transits. Several are shown so one may match yours. The Product Manual can be downloaded.

Chris,
In the photo it looks like it does have the leveling and angle bubbles. I agree, the transit looks exactly like the surveyors transits I have seen.

It does look like the Brunton transit rig. That mirror is so you can see who's lost :D
