Competition vs BIG finish?

Ya I know "there are threads about this already" but that has only confused me further..some show competition with the little dimples natural to stock sheet metal..an some without dimples and only machine marks.. I recall fairly recently Jerry saying comp was like satin with light machine marks... but I thought that was the BIG..
Anyone have an example of recent comp finish..?

The new comp finish seems to me to be very similar to the old BIG finish, possibly with a few less marks. I do wish that we could get the old comp finish as an option, it was by far my favorite for a non-coated user.

Here's some detail pics of Comp. Finish on my SK...

Interesting..thanks petey..that's what I was after.
That was the O2W release correct? Not a old school release..

Hard to explain but my CF FMV8 has both, very faint grind marks AND tiny INFI dimples in the same surface. Nothing like that CF SK pictured above. It looks more like a traditiinal comp to me but with smaller dimples. It's like the sheet was surface ground prior to the heat treat. I'll try to get a pic tonight.

Sweet.. I'd appreciate it pal!

Silent Knight may have even been more recent than OP2W...IIRC, it was OP2W pt. 2.

There seems to be different "flavors" of Competition Finish. Each batch has characteristics unique to its own.

Such as when Cam mentioned the run of CF DS8 had an almost satin finish-- it's true. The run of Silent Knights were less refined and there were a few guys who disliked it so much they put their's up on the Exchange upon receipt. Others really liked it and most of em got scooped pretty fast.

Comp. Finish tooling marks are cool with me...I like em.

Although not a Comp. Finish proper, I think Jerry would have a smash hit if he'd replicate the finish I've found under some of my original ergo series strippers under the paint on the flats. LOTSA uniform INFI dimples >>> Check em out >>>

Yeah, those uniformly dimpled surfaces look pretty cool. I bead blasted a buddy's ASH2 for him and all of the flats were perfectly dimpled like the pomel of that knife you pictured. Tried to trade him mine with machined flats and he wasn't having any of it. Lol!

The original BIG finish was my favorite. Truly, a slightly less finished satin that was dimple free and NOT double cut (bead blasted) hence the name Busse Industrial Grade satin

Now, we have confusion. People call double cut BIG and vice versa when in reality we originally had-

Satin
BIG
DC
CG
And they were all distinctly different but I think between the normal confusion on Busse blades and the newbie factor with folks who weren't around for the original finish, we get where we are today.

Sig - I agree with your overall point.

One thing to add - Busse did put out some blades distinctly called BIG DC, which threw me for a loop.

The best examples that I have seen for people to reference for the BIG SATIN finish to be seen in it's true glory are the NMFSH, INFIMANDU, ASHBM, and the TG14...

Those show true BIG Satin - I was excited to see these on the Mountainmandu's and ordered BIG!

It is a great finish.

My speculation to explain that apperance:

Bar stock is blanked to the blade shape. Laser? Water jet? or??
Blank is carved by CNC tools.
Followed by heat treat process.
Decarb is then removed (blasting?), leaving dimples/texture.

I always imagined the heat treat caused the dimples ... don't know what made me think that-- maybe I dreamed it?

When I've stripped blades there's dimples under the decarb layer of some models, too.
