I have lost my EDC Leatherman Wave. I am considering getting a new one and not holding back.

What is new with this model and what is good?

Is the belt clip and lanyard ring a positive thing . . .do they work well or is this a gimmick?

What about black finish vs shiny? Is the black durable?

What about the interchangeable feature? Does this make the tool shaky?

Can I find a replacement blade in a premium alloy?

Is there some m oddification or third-party thing I should look for?

I don't know about the accessory pocket clip, as the Charge I got was/is missing that piece. (not that I would use it anyway. I loathe pocket clips.)
It did come with the accessory lanyard ring, however. The only down side to it is if you use the can opener/bottle opener, or bit driver, when you unlock that tool you can inadvertantly unlock the accessory lanyard ring, and it could fall off.
LM did hide a slide-out lanyard ring on the other handle located in front of the saw and against the inboard liner between the saw and scissors.View attachment 1773884
It is a little difficult to slide out (I used the flat screwdriver bit) but it is worth the effort, as it can't fall off.
I moved my lanyard to it, and took off the accessory lanyard ring.

The interchangable tools (saw and file on some, in addition to the proprietary tool bits is solid. They don't wiggle around or fall out.

I don't know how long lived the black (or any other color) coating is.

I will say "A former co-worker carried a red Sprint (I think it is. The keychain mini pliers tool) and it still looked good after several years carry. Better than a long carried colored SAK ALOX, at any rate."
I don't know if LM uses the same process to color the larger tools.

I have the version just before the + series. I use the pocket clip and it has worked out well. I had two clips break and the third one I tempered it so it wasn’t brittle and it’s still going strong. I don’t use the lanyard ring so I can’t comment on it. I use my Wave at work and around the farm and ranch and it’s very handy to have when you’re away from the tool box. I also have the accessory tool kit and bit extension, I don’t use them often but they have came in useful in a pinch. I carry them in a edc organizer. That’s about all I can contribute, sorry I don’t know about the other questions.

I forgot to say I have a LM signal that has the replacement cutters and they are excellent. It cuts hard wire easily and haven’t had any problems with them yet. I may get a Wave plus that has replacement cutters if my regular one wears out.

Based on your questions, I'm assuming that you had the original 1998 model of the Wave. Here are my answers, in order:

1. Compared to the original Wave, the post-2004 Wave and the Wave Plus (the current production model) are larger, heavier, and more solid. The plier heads are stronger, and all of the tools lock. The Wave Plus also has replaceable wire cutters, which is a nice feature.

2. The belt clip and lanyard ring are ok, I guess; I never use them. I find the Wave to be too large and heavy to carry comfortably in any way other than in a belt sheath.

3. I've never owned a black oxide Leatherman, so I can't answer this one. Stainless steel works just fine for me.

4. Just to be clear: the Wave's only "interchangeable" feature is its bit driver. The Wave doesn't have the interchangeable saw and file that afishhunter mentioned above; that feature is unique to the Wave's big brother, the Surge.

The bit exchanger has a retaining spring inside it that presses against the side of the bit to minimize wobbling (for instance, the bit doesn't rattle or fall out if you shake the Wave), but there is enough wiggle room to move the bit back and forth by hand against the spring.

The main drawback of the bit driver is its bulk and lack of reach, which can make working in tight spaces difficult. Even with the bit extender (which I recommend getting), the whole assembly is still wider and more bulky than a regular screwdriver. The bit extender, with its greater leverage, does tend to rattle a little bit in use. Also, the Wave only has room for one (double-ended) bit at a time, so the ability to accept multiple bits isn't really an advantage unless you have the bit kit and carry it with you.

5. You can find Leatherman Charge blades in 154CM and S30V on Ebay. All of the Leatherman Charge blades and tools will fit the Wave. Gotta love interchangeable parts!

6. Not exactly aftermarket, but I recommend getting the full bit kit and bit extender. The Wave's bit driver only fits the flattened Leatherman bits, but the Leatherman bits are backwards-compatible with standard 1/4" hex sockets. And the bit extender does fit standard 1/4" hex bits.

I hope my answers helped.

Goold stuff here!

When I referred to replaceable parts, I was seeing eBay lots that seemed to be taken from fully dissasembled tols.

Thanks everyone. I intend to get myself as new Wave (shiny probably) and later on get a replacement knife blade, then a Bit-Kit.

I was using my previous Wave as an EDC pocketknife role. Carried it in a belt sheath mounted horizontally. I don't live on a farm or work in an industrial setting, so the sideways sheath blended in when riding a city bus (how I lost it). The newer "MOLY" pouch may be more secure.

Again: Thanks everyone.
