I ran across this by accident while doing some research on an entirely unrelated subject.
This could easily be built for switching from machine to machine or from wood dust to metal dust.

That's a very cool idea. I like the use of the magnets to keep it lined up to the current port.

I wonder if it's possible to improve the seal? maybe line one side with metal sheet and the other with some silicone sheet?

Agreed, a sheet rubber gasket glued to the slider should be tight enough with the magnets pulling it snug.

I think that this setup would be of the most use to folks who use a shop vac as their dust collector but have several machines on the bench that create dust/debris.

I use blast gates at each machine, and a central vacuum.

This is basically a simple home brew blast gate with multiple choices. The guys with shop vacs often can't use blast gates easily or at all, depending on hose size.

Yes, either a rubber face on the slider or a large O-ring would make a good seal. The rare earth magnets should pull it tight.
