Jo has this old dagger kicking around that is difficult to display because it's amazing awesomeness literally melts any attempts to contain it.
I didn't like hanging it from wire or hooks because I felt anything touching it messed up the lines and the flow so we had it in some kind of a box with a velvet cushion and the clear lid pressed it down where you could kind of stand it upright and sort of see it but it was always shifting around and it was kind of crappy. So it was mostly on display laying flat on top of the fireplace mantle. And cattywampus. And sad.
My dad, who has worked his whole life as an engineer, has always been a pretty good woodworker. I remember the grandfather clock that he built when I was a kid. At the time I didn't understand that it wasn't some kind of a kit. Obviously the escapement mechanism was purchased, but otherwise he made that entire amazing clock from scratch. And bookshelves and other fine woodworking. He's always made these nice heirloom quality pieces. So when he took it upon himself to make this display case for Jo we were obviously humbled and proud to have a piece of his work to show.
He's getting up into retirement age and thinking about applying his handiwork to some fun projects and he and I both thought it would be cool if he did something that keyed into what I'm doing so he's going to make a few of these boxes and offer them for sale to anybody here who has a special knife that they would like to display.
Obviously, it would not need to be a CPK in that box. I think something like a Warenski might look nice in one too.
I've made a video that shows his display case design.
They're not cheap, obviously, but it contains the DNA of one of the few people in this world that I genuinely admire and you'll see a similar level of attention to details that you expect with anything with the Carothers name on it.
If anybody is interested, send me a PM or an email.
If anybody is coming to Blade Show and wants to talk to him, he'll be at my table.
