So I have been looking for a quality felling axe for awhile. My budget is $150, and so far the best option seems to be the Council Tools Felling Axe. It is at the top of my budget, but I have heard only good things about it. I really love the finish and the steel it is made of. My only concern it the size. I am not a huge guy, 5,9". Although I have decent abdominal muscles my arms are basicly twigs...so that might be a problem. This is not a huge dilema as I could gain strenagt by swing the axe for a whille. It would certainly have it's work cut out for it. I have swung axes before, but nothing of this caliber. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks:D

ebay, vintage plumb or kelly 3.5lb head. Hang it on a handle, you're looking at anywhere between 30-70 depending on head "clean up" required.

Velvicuts are CT's top of the line. They are nice axes. I have a Velvicut Hudson Bay and I consider it as fine as or finer than most of my vintage Hudson Bay axes. As for the size, the 3 1/2 pound felling axe was the most common size axe sold for many years and they were wielded by people of all sizes. Just use it in a safe manner and quit before you get too tired and you'll be fine.

My question would be how big of trees will you be working on....could you get a Velvicut Boys Axe?? They're easier to control and very useful.. I have felled 12" trees and then brushed, limbed and buck them into manageable lengths... don't let the classification of Boys Axe fool you ...they can work and have their place in the woods, on the farm, and at the campsite...

Peace, Rooster

I would be in the area of anywhere from 10-18 inches in diameter, probably most around the 13-inch mark. As for restoring an old axe, I will look into that more but the ease of getting something as a whole piece really comforts me. Thanks for all the input guys!

I would look hard at a Council 3 1/2 lb Jersey Classic with forged bevels and a straight handle. See if they will put a 32" straight instead of the 36".
A second choice would be the council boys axe.

Maybe the Snow and Neally full sized axe? 3.5lbs on a 28" haft. Baryonyx has one for sale right now in the B section at a great price.

Good call. I, for one, would be sucker for one such as that!

Save a vintage axe head from winding up in the scrapyard !!!!!!!!!

I'll browse around eBay for a good head. The question will inevitably not be whether I can find a good head and handle, but if I can fit the handle right. Thanks for the help! Ill also take a gander at the Snow and Nelly and the Classic Jersy

That's a sweet deal I'd buy it if I didn't need it I bought a S&N HB that is absolutely beautiful and have not used it, maybe never will. Depending where you live I would hit the flea markets and swap meets before shelling out the big bucks.

The Velvicut full size is a great axe. If you're thinking of doing some splitting along with your chopping than it's your best choice. If you're looking for more of a camping/brushing axe then get the boy's axe. No shame in man using a boys axe. They're handy as heck.

alright, thanks for the help guys. I will update ( hopefully with pics) when I decide which one to get. Yall have presented me with a lot of good options to browse.
