I thought this El Lobo would look cool with a polished bit so I messaged it, repainted, rehung, and stitched up a sheath for it.

Compared to one produced later. (c. 2005? ~Early 00’s)

According to Council only about 2500 El Lobos were made, back in 2005, and they weren't a very popular model at the time. The dies failed to pay for themselves. It was only in the past couple of years that they've attained something of a status as a collectors' item.

Indeed, their failure to gain popularity when they were being manufactured contributes to their scarcity today.

They were made for about 20 years throughout the 1990’s. The patent was issued in 1986 and the last year they appeared in their catalog was 2005.

Yes, I know for certain that we had one in the early 90's, somewhere between 1990 - 1992 is when we got it. I remember we sold them at the hardware store where me and my father worked. It was the leather sheath that said EL LOBO on it. I wonder if it's still floating around somewhere at my parents house, or if we lost it while cutting firewood one year - as was the fate of many hatchets. I never paid a ton of attention to it - at the time it was just another hatchet, a cool one - and bigger than most we had, but never thought it was super special.

I like Hudson Bay pattern, but I was never a fan of El Lobo, till today. I guess your leather work makes it more appealing. Can you share what kind of leather paint do you use. Some kind of leather wax for the finish?

Sure! Although I’m just getting started in leathercraft, this is only my fourth sheath to date.
I used Exo-Flo Edge Flex for edge paint and an airbrush to spray Fiebing’s dye. I also sprayed a couple thin coats of Resolene to set the dye and seal it.

It’s smilar to my last effort here.

I’m on to a much more ambitious project now..
