I was reading an article about mom & pop knive stores in Blade when I realized that this place is only about 20 minutes away from me. So, I braved the hordes of tourists and went over there today.

This store has an enormous selection! They say they keep over 7000 knives in stock, and it looks like all of them are on display. Everything from tactical folders to fixed blades to kitchen knives to razors to multitools to scissors to hatchets, tomahawks, and spears.

It was great to be able to check out the complete folder lines from all of the major factories. I mostly buy over the Internet without actually handling them. There weren't many major manufacturers that were missing.

As far as fixed blades go, I didn't see as many that I recognized. They had the whole Cold Steel line (including the spears), but I couldn't find any Fallkniven or Busse knives. They might have been there; I didn't stay that long, and I was quite overwhelmed.

Service was friendly and very helpful. The lady I spoke with (mom, I guess), cheerfully admitted that she had forgotten which Kershaw folder was the Ricochet, although she tried hard to remember all of the names of the thousands of knives in the store as well as her husband. Very refreshing. I think it's partially a female thing. When it comes to gun and knive salespeople, I usually find that women are much more helpful and easy to deal with, because they're not so anxious to show off.

The bottom line is that this is a great place to check out the knives you've been lusting after, but as much as I like to patronize local businesses, the prices here were outrageous. I'm talking 60-80% higher than your average Internet prices. The Kershaw Ricochet is $109.95 at discountknives.com; here it was $170!

Great Opportunity Craig. I too live in a small town (in TN) and there just aren't any nice knife stores close by. When I'm traveling toward Knoxville I always try to stop by Gatlinburg at Smoky Mountain Knife Works. MAN, now that is a beautiful store. There are as many display knives as there are knives for sale. Unfortunately there are absolutely no Customs.

But just to wander in and spend a couple of hours is always great.

Oh, and about Town Names, about the best ones that are near here are "Turtletown", "Suck Creek" and "Bucksnort"!

I saw this post and wondered who'd be the first to jump on this ! I've heard of this place. It actually exists ! That would be pretty weird to say, "I live in Intercourse...." I guess I "live" in Intercourse too, but it's nowhere near PA !

Why is $170 for that knife outrageous? It's under MSRP by $5. I'm not sure why there a "oh my gosh" attitude w/retail stores selling at or slightly below retail. Who's to say you couldn't have negotiated a deal? You may have indeed been able to support your local knife store. You can't tell me, that by having 7000+ knives on display for your pleasure, the ability to see the knife your purchasing, a store that will back you up should you have most any problem, is entitiled to a ask MSRP or slightly below for those services offered? That's got to be worth something. You think they should offer the same $ as the net and show goers? Most of these retails stores don't meet or match net/show guys pricing, and I think it's sad they get labled as outrageous because of it. If this is the net mentallity, let's all pray for all knife stores and their future's. Hopefully Country Knives will even be a there for you/us next time we go down to check them out. Just my 2 cents.

They're entitled to ask whatever they want, and I'm entitled to pay it or not, or say it's outrageous or not. I don't expect to pay the MSRP for anything, and factory knives are more likely to be backed up by the manufacturer than the retailer. The fact that the Internet sites can discount these products by 60 or 70% and still make a profit shows how much of a markup there is, and yes I think it's outrageous. Granted, a brick and mortar knife shop has much more overhead, but not that much more.

No disrespect, but the Kershaw was 35% diffence not 60 to 80%(not estimating tax vs shipping). Majority of wholesale vs MSRP is only 50% difference, so I'm not quite getting your math. Even if a dealer got a special/discount from a manufacturer or wholesaler, 60 to 80% would not bring any sort of profit.
I'm sure all knife stores are not very pleased with wasting there valubale time with all the internet buyers who just go in to compare different models(OH, they know who you are).
Personally, I think the net is a tremendous resource, but there is more to consider here than just price. I don't think that manufactures would agree with you with this, and considering they are all producing the products your lusting after, does not factor into your thoughts? There is a reason that Spyderco,CRKT and others have MAPP pricing(agree with or not). They have set these pricing standards in place mostly because of the net/show mentallity we are talking about, both with the buyers and sellers. Selling something $10 over cost sucks for many different reasons, and the ramifacations that it brings on is a bad thing for this industry that you seem to love. Yes you can say, and do, and express yourself however you want, but try to see this in a slightly altered perspective, rather than felling like I'm stepping on your free speech. Why do you think manufactureres and retailers are so concerned with this matter? Are you telling the manufacturers that there products are overpriced cause you found unauthorized sorces that saves you a few dollars? And because of these sources, you think the retail stores are now a rip off?

Maybe the net is in fact going to change the current pricing structure chain
(manufacturer/dealer/ELU) as we know it, and hopefully we will all like those changes it brings. Manufacturer direct, I can see it coming now! Maybe I'm old school on this one. I can respect your opinion here, but I guess I will just agree to disagree.

Peace

Craig, I'm with you on this. BTW, your math looks ok to me. It appears to me that they are marking the knife up by 94% over cost. IMO, that's a pretty high markup.

Ok, SID, I agree to disagree, too. I can live with a "good karma" surcharge, but not $60.

I stopped by to check the store out myself, as I don't live all that far from it. It is an extremely impressive selection of knives from a wide variety of production knife companies. By and large they are the higher end of the production range.

Depending on how serious you are about knives and collecting, this store may or may not be of interest to you. I think they only had one custom maker, and I don't believe they had any mid-tech knives. It seems strange to me if you're going to have somewhere north of a quarter million dollars in knife inventory that you would not have some of the collector grade custom knife variety of stuff.

For instance they did not carry Chris Reeve knives (not exactly high end custom). They did not carry Henkel's, which means they did not have the kamer chefs knives that Henkel's puts out. There were a number of odd kind of gaps like that in the lines that they carried. However then they would have copious amounts of other producers. So I guess what I'm saying is there inventory was not very well curated.

The other thing I noticed was everything was at full retail or higher. As a small businessman myself I am willing to pay a premium for a place that's willing to hold so much inventory in their showroom. There are however limits, and full retail is just out of the question in today's online shopping age. Consequently there is a lot of old stock there, and if there is a knife you are looking for that is no longer in production and demanding a premium on the secondary market you may find something interesting there in that regard.

All that said, it is quite a spectacle to see 7000 quality nice together. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood, and you never know what you might find. In fairness about pricing, I did not find anything I wanted to buy so I did not try to negotiate on the price. It is possible that they will move off of the full MSRP.
