Think this has been covered. Being new to this forums couldn't find it. What knives did cowboys carry ???

Wasn’t the exact same question, though. Could be rephrased as “what knives did every 10yo kid carry in the 50s and 60s (cause of course we all wanted to BE cowboys)”?

The real cowboys I’ve ever met, their knives are all beat to hell. Either cowboyin’ is tough on knives, or they drag ‘em around on a rope dallied to the horn.

Cowboys now. From my experience. Gerbers mostly.

There is a thing called a buck crosslock that may still exist. But was supposed to be the bees knees according to the internets

I owned one for a bit, not that one. The old black one.

Anyway the theory is that you can get caught up in the tack or some such. And need a quick one handed rope cutter to get you free.

Yah. I’ve got an old Imperial that’s just about the twin of that, except some cowboy must have carried it, cause half the blade is sharpened away and one handle scale is cracked. A cowboy knife for sure.

Old-time cowboys were badly paid so couldn't afford much more than a basic knife, likely a Barlow or something similar. I doubt many carried FBs while in the saddle.

Cowboys and Ranch labourers in my area (Calgary Alberta) have been carrying Buck 110’s and 112’s for decades. Along with various Case and Schrade Old Timer slip joints. Maybe the odd Ka-Bar USMC or Buck 119 during hunting season. Lots of Mora knives.

I work with tools, cowboys worked and work. I've never seen an expensive folder or fixed blade being used on site. So yes a Mora or its equivalent (then) would be the perfect tool/knife. Tough, cuts as well as any knife, replaceable/cheap and easy to sharpen.

How about a new thread............
What knives did indi......er be natives Americans use........

With the improvement of repeating arms, I thought cowboys would be carrying smaller knives. I included a gaucho knife (afterall a Southern America cowboy), a thin Montana Americana Hudson Bay, so like a butcher knife, and finally a small Bowie from Mike Man’s Idaho Knife works.8C0C1BC4-8B55-42E2-A3AC-C9420C00568D.jpegDDA9D4E5-E8D0-4517-A40C-AF2AE3EEB19D.jpeg2ABAC305-5C1F-45EA-9E2B-7A7E6CADC305.jpeg
