CPK handle scales question(s)

I was very fortunate to land a Light Chopper a few weeks ago. I selected the TeroTuf but I think that these handle scales with the spacers (inlays?) may have made the girth a bit thicker than my size 9 (actually like 8 3/4) hands like to handle. So here are some Qs:

A- Does Nathan offer separate and extra handle scales and if so for how much? I'd like to pick up an extra set of micarta if the option is available and I assume that to change over is not a problem. I'm even willing to send to Nathan's workshop to take care of this and will pay for shipping both ways if deemed the best option.

B- How is the grip on the micarta vs G10 handles? This is something I am considering for the Field Knife which I am hoping to score. My only point of reference so far is the S!K G10 handles pre to Guy's implementation of micro texturing on S!K which I found to be too smooth for my liking. I have not had one of his micro textured
tweaks yet but from what I see and from what I hear from other users, they are a big improvement over the older smooth G10 handle scales. How do CPK's G10 / Micarta scales compare to S!K scales in both material of new and old. Please let me stress that my Q is not to pair up these two great makers and suppliers but merely
because of my own lack of anecdotal experiences.

Thank you.

I've got a field knife with G10, and I think it feels more slippery than Survive g10 even though CPK got the grooves. But in use I don't think it really makes any difference. I guess it's because they're buffed and S!K is not? Just guessing.

I'd also like to buy a spare set of micarta handles for my FK just to test them out...

Thanks ni1s. I can attest that TeroTuf is not slippery at all and is the toughest against abuse or accidental dropsies, hence the name I suppose. I hope that Jo / Nate him in as to whether they are or will be offering extra handle scales and if so at what prices.

Thank you.

The girth on the terotuf scales are the same as the micarta scales, the liner doesn't add to the thickness, it's integrated into the design. The grip feels big when held towards the back because it is intended to fully fill the hand, which adds control and reduces forearm fatigue in extended use. A competition cutter is generally even larger. However, if it's not right for your hand, I have a set of scales left over from making the Heavy Chopper you could try. Except for the palm swell, I made them a little narrower to compensate for the thick tang on the HC. If you'd like to try them, send me a PM and I'll get you taken care of.

Nathan, thank you for taking the time to respond and the offer of extra handle scales would be wonderful. I will PM you in a few about them. Please make sure your PM box hasn't filled up already for one day :D

Nathan, how about using different type of handle fasteners to make the knives look more refined. There's nothing wrong with them but it reminds me of the China made fasteners that Esee and top's uses.

The standard S!K has grips of Phenolic Resin and cotton canvas. The grips provide a good grippy surface when wet . Perfect for field use in all conditions.

I was thinking about your comment yesterday, and I think you might be on to something.

personally, I'm fine with the fasteners as they are. Pretty sure they're US made, but I'll check on that.

however, I think that there is a pretty good opportunity here for customization. You can already interchange handle slabs, and likely in the future, be able to order spare sets for different conditions.

It occurred to me that, because a standard flathead fastener is used, why couldn't you go to a guy like Steve Kelly, get 6AL4V titanium fasteners and anodize them in whatever colour you like?

In fact, CPK 'could' offer prepackaged titanium fastener kits in various colours as an option that can be added to your order- either preinstalled or in a little package separately...

Lorien or Nathan,

Could you guys answer a couple of questions on the terotuff scales please? I've been thinking about going after a set of them for awhile now, especially for my next field knife, should I be so lucky to score one, as I am much more a hunter than a bushcrafter. I have always gone with the canvas micartas over other options for their better grip when wet/bloody. Would the terotuff be another step better for non-slip grip in this type of use? Also, for long-term use is there any issue with the terotuff other than I think Nathan mentioned they are not as pretty/don't hold their color as well? Thank you in advance.

HK: Obviously I'm neither of those esteemed gents, but I would like to chime in if I may:

I'd have reservations about lots of blood on that material. I don't mind it with a Light Chopper as that is not meant to be a meat prep and processing blade per se, but if I'm lucky enough to score a Field Knive, I'll be putting in my request for one with buffed black micarta handle scales.

Terotuf is the answer for wet conditions and it is very durable. It's polyester, so also UV resistant. Maybe not quite as stable as G10.

You can absolutely chime in (after all I'm asking in your thread :) ) I have zero experience with terotuff, and it's not like I'm unhappy with the micarta, but am always thinking about good-->better-->best for a particular situation. So what would make you have reservations about blood on the terotuff?

I'm not sure how hygienic TeroTuf would be on a skinner, there isn't a long history with it. I'd worry about fats soaking in and going funky. Micarta is impermeable, Terotuf less so.

Thank you Nathan! That's what I was looking for, and I will stick with your advice for the micartas. I do not want any funky fat to contend with! Thanks again sir.

You lucky dog I actually wrote on the FB page to see if I could get terotufs for my shiv . As well textured the micarta is.. it slips around a little on.my dry calloused hands .
But alas they where never made for the shiv :(
