Hi,I'm pretty sure CPM3V makes for a good all around camp knife-ie:chopper,slicer..etc,but what about CPM10V?Are it's attributes better than CPM3V?Corrosion resistance,edge holding,ease of sharpening,toughness?

Is the higher the number in the "V series" necessarily better, like CPM3V,CPM10V,CPM125V?

I really like CPM3V & plan on getting most of my custom knives with this steel.I'm just curious about the others.

Please don't give me the link to Crucible's site.I've bookmarked it & read it several times.

I'm looking for "hands on" experiences & thoughts,pros/cons about these steels from you guys.

As always,Thanks in advance for your helpful feedback:)

Take care,
John

They are both great steels for their own particular applications. I think you've hit on 3V's strengths, toughness and edge holding. I've got a couple of 3V's from Fehrman, all are tough and easy to sharpen. Edge holding seems to be on par with D2, which I think is very good.

10V wins in edge holding (but 3V is no slouch), but I've heard it can be a bear to sharpen. I only have one knife in 10V, a Wilson, and it sharpens easily because it has a *very* thin high flat grind, which is my favorite. It is my champion edge holder, easily beating S30V, D2, CPM D2, all by a wide margin, and even better than M2 HSS. I haven't yet had the pleasure of unzipping an elk with it yet, but hope to this year. I've tested it with rope, and it's quite impressive.

By easy to sharpen, I mean that I can completely reset the edge bevel in under a minute on a DMT blue, maybe 10 strokes per side, give or take. It is quite an impressive knife.

What's the consensus on CPM 10V, now that it's been out for like 20 years? Can it take thin edges like 3V and M4 can? Can it get as sharp?

It seems to be the same "through the grain" toughness as M2 at the same hardness, and superior to D2. I'm interested in ordering some before Crucible goes down the drain.

What kind of angles are you talking about?.
Ive had problems in the past taking so called super steels down to far.
Also what is the reistance to rust like compared to other carbon steels?.
Thanks.

CPM M4 and 52100 (both at 63 rc) I can take down to 20 degrees inclusive and they will be more chip resistant than the S30V/154CM/D2 class of steels at 30 degrees. I'm wondering where CPM 10V fits in.

Resistance to rust, Phil Wilson said it doesn't have that much corrosion resistance, but a mirror polish does wonders. I'm sure it has more corrosion resistance than 52100 though (which is none).
