CR2 battery?

I have been looking at the current crop of CR2 flashlights and was wondering about the advantages of this cell over a CR123? I see that the light can be slightly smaller in size. Runtimes and output seem to favor the 123. Battery costs are super high for the CR2. Is there some advantage that I am missing?

Size is the only advantage, if you even want to call it that. A CR2 light is negligibly smaller than a comparable CR123. A CR2 and CR123 battery will have the same chemistry, so you have the same voltage and all that.

Size is the advantage of a CR2 over a CR123A, as Storl said. For example, the Nitecore EZ 123 has a volume of 20.89 c^3, while the EZ CR2 has a volume of 17.32 c^3. About a 20% difference. Not a huge difference, but in our ever-bulging pockets these days, the extra size (and weight) of a 123 sized light can be a deal breaker.

If you can deal with the size though, a 123 sized light will almost always be brighter, and always will have a longer battery life. 900mAh capacity of a CR2 vs 1500mAh for a CR123A. 40% increase of overall output for a 20% increase in size is worth the sacrifice in pocket space for some. Batteries are usually the same price too.

I've got a 4 sevens Quark mini CR2. I run RCR2 (rechargeable) batteries in it (unprotected, puts out ~4.2 V right off charger; not recommended by manufacturer due to heat issues on high however I've not had any problems as of yet). If running rechargeable batteries; especially unprotected, make sure you have a volt meter.

Advantages: Size
Disadvantages: Run time, possible cost of batteries depending on source.

Advice:

If size matters i.e. bigger is NOT better go w/ CR2. If running primary batteries order a bunch from the same site you get your light from although radio shack does carry the batteries. I live in Hawaii where 1 CR2 primary is ~ $9, hence the rechargeable batteries.

If size does not matter i.e. an extra 1/2 in. or so will not matter go w/ CR123 or RCR123.
