Creating a Axe handle from scratch?

I picked up a nice true temper axe for $5 today. I was wondering what would be the best way to make my own handle for it? I know I can go to home depot and buy one for $10, but I would like to make it. Any suggestions?

I don't know the best way. I've only made a couple of handles. Both were radially split out of logs. This gives the most stable blank. Here's one I've posted before. It's Osage Orange shown with the log I used in the pictures.

The axe came with a handle that needed replacing. I flatened the blank, used the old handle for a template, and cut it out on a bandsaw. The rest of the shaping was done with hand tools. I made the wedge out of red oak. There have been dicussions here on handle and wedge material, well worth looking for in previous posts.

Ive made a few. You can post in that thread I posted (how I make axe handles) or send me a message with any questions.
