Greetings

I'm searching for a gentleman's blade. At the moment the CRKT CEO flipper and the Civivi Chronic are on my mind, but I can't really decide which one to go for.
I'm curious what the community would choose.

Any other suggestions to mix up my head are of course welcome.

I second the Civivi. Much higher quality, better steel, and better bang for the buck. I own plenty of higher end folders yet still carry and appreciate my Civivis. Hard to beat for the price point.
My sentiments exactly. I have two Civivi's, and they are excellent. I also have a WE and a WE made Massdrop Gent select, all excellent. I normally don't buy sub $100 folders, but Civivi has me hooked. The Exarch is the front flipper version of the Chronic I believe, and I have the CF/Damascus version. I haven't bought a CRKT in probably 15 years, after the lock failed and nearly de-fingered me (M16-12Z).

Old pic, and I have since cleaned the case, but here is my Exarch with my WE Deacon. Fantastic knives.

I think this warrants a comparo shot:

I dont actually own the chronic but have the exarch which is very similar. Knife guys here will tell you to pick the Chronic/exarch because, to put it simply, it's much better at being a knife.

However if you want a good looking, "gentleman" carry that's more for looks and lightness and carry profile, I have to hand it to the CEO. In fact, the AUS8 or 8cr whatever they're using, fits the knife fine as it's not meant to really be used as much.

The chronic/exarch is quite a bit better built and noticeably heavier. It slices noticeably better than the CEO due to it's well done hollow grind. I got bored one day while making thick nylon signs and tested both out...the Exarch cut much more efficiently where the CEO was more "wedging" them apart after the initial slice. I also had to apply a bit more pressure because the factory edge I got from CRKT was...mediocre at best. Also the CEO handle is not very comfortable used for more than a few cuts.

Chronic/exarch also has a better piercing tip believe it or not, the CEO tip is a little bit "wedgier" and doesn't stab as well.

Edit: CEO action is good, but the flicking takes a little getting used to then you can deploy every time. Didnt try the CEO flipper yet, but I heard mixed thoughts. The Chronic/exarch action is...great, I mean it's a Civivi I have yet to e counter a Civivi with a subpar action.

I voted Chronic btw, but would love to hear what the one guy who voted CEO has to say :)

A note on steel and price, the chronic/exarch can be had about 10$ cheaper than my D2 CEO, granted it has micarta as well. Civivi's "Chinese D2" as people like to call it, is very good in my experience. Strangely, it doesnt want to patina as well...my rat 2 in D2 patina much easier...

Hope this helps! Just buy both!

CRKT aren't bad, but Civivi is superior in almost every way. Steel choices, fit and finish, quality control, its no contest. I would go Civivi if the choice were mine.

The overall trend here is correct. I own a Chronic and I've handled the CEO. The Chronic is better by a huge margin.

The discussion of overall quality between the brands is also correct. Having taken apart about a dozen Civivis now, I'm impressed by the fit and finish. While 9Cr18Mov is already an underrated steel, WE has perfected the heat treatment for it. It's a slam dunk over 8Cr13Mov or AUS-8. I haven't tried CRKT's D2 but WE's 9Cr18Mov outcuts a lot of the budget D2. Heck, I'd be curious to put it up against the expensive premium versions off the CEO in S35VN.
