Does anyone own the Crosman 2240 .22cal? How effective is it on close range small game?

Well, lets put it this way, it's probably your best bet in an off the shelf air pistol for that purpose. But that isn't necessarily saying much.

Also, what do you consider close range?

I've got a benjamin sheridan that I have no problem taking bunnies with, out to 30 yds... I've got a couple of buds who are just as deadly with their crosmans out about the same range.. It's again, all about the pellet being used, and where you puttting it on the shot...

2240 is great, with a bit a reasearch and a dremel tool you can really improve that gun, I only get about 10-15 shots per Co2 and have taken rabbits at 25 yard clean, 2240 is kinda like the fiero of the air pistol world, all kinds of after martet and home done mods to trick it out into a serious pistol.

lots of fun and decent for the money.

Squirrels and rabbits out to 25 yards should be no problem.

HOWEVER

As mentioned, there are several mods that will take it to the next level.

10 yds and under.

get a 2250, if you want to keep the gun in stock trim. Buy a pair of pistol grips off of a crosman forum or from crosman or an airgunsmith directly.

Thing is, co2 NEEDS more barrel length to really get power into the pellets. My 2240 can take small to medium pests at 5yards out to -maybe 15 yards, but it's just much more comfortable with a 2250.

You may be better off with a 1377, especially if you can do the valve angle relief and valve spring mods. Those are easy, 5 minutes of work.

Now, if you want to customize, a 2240 is a great place to start, - a 10 inch barrel, steel breech, and basic BOSS valve job will make it a much better (if somewhat wasteful of CO2) backyard or truck farm hunter.

Its a great gun with lots of mod potential. Here is a pic of my custom crosman, I have recently swapped out the LPA rear sight for a williams sight. I have taken out a whole platoon of squirrels with this in my backyard.

I ordered the stock 2240 yesterday only to find out that Crosman has a custom shop on their website where you can get longer barrels, better sights, etc put on the 2240 straight from the factory. :grumpy:

crosman won't do valve jobs. !!!!!!

I'd suggest checking out, for example, crooked barn- he can set you up with a valve job and breech/bolt easily. You can decide on the barrel later :D

return it, you get a lot of nice features with the custom shop gun

such as

steel breech
longer barrels
adjustable trigger pull
adjustable trigger stop
custom engraving
custom bolt
etc..................

Speaking of Crosmans.....

I have an ancient Mark I. The o-ring on the but cap that pierces the CO2 certridge is shot.

Can a suitable relplacement o-ring be found at a hardware store?

Hope this doesn't hijack the thread but what kind of ammo are you guys using?

I used to have a 1377 and always wondered about it's hunting capability. Maybe I should pick another one up.

there's a thread about that in WSS. But I'll give you my 1377 experience-

1: I do recommend relieving the port angle and lightening the valve spring. DOn't worry too much about that, but it's easy stuff and the crosman forum is available for that.

2: dome or wadcutter. the 1377 doesn't generate quite enough power to make the expensive crow magnums really work any better. For especially small game, 10 grain crosman premier heavy pellets- they have a bit more knockdown and will penetrate in birds and smaller rodents at very close ranges. For backyard quirrel/rat/crow- regular crosman premiers, gamo hunters, or gamo match. Whatever shoots best. If you want to spend more money and get higher end domes or wadcutters, don't go over 8.5 grains for this- the penetration won't happen.

RWS Hobby

They are lighter and have a flatter flight path for accuracy. I find accuracy is more important than knock down power with airguns.

Hey Guys...

As Jimi said the 2240 is a Tinkerers dream..

Actually Jimi did the valve job on mine, and put it this way,, it Really needs to be bulked out, as you don't get allot of shots per powerlet anymore.. LOL

I turned my 2240 into a 2250 by adding a stock and 14" barrel.. All it really needs is a decent scope or sites,,and a bulk adapter ..

I'd say it's one of the better of the shelf guns..

The 1377 can be modded for more power as well...
