Hello there folks,

i've come to ask a question to some of the tomahawk experts here.

I would like to purchase my first tactical style tomahawk. i dont have alot of money so i've picked out the Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk and the SOG Fusion tactical tomahawk.

they are similarly priced at around 50 bux and i was wondering which one you guys would choose.

i am looking for a tomahawk that can do some survival work:
-chopping
-a little splitting (small stuff)
-clearing/cutting

i am also looking for something that in a pinch could be used in emergency situations:
-breaking glass
-popping door hinges
-possibly punching holes through stuff (doors, drums, etc).

and lastly (hopefully i wont have to) a combat situation:
-self defence against animals or people
-possibly zombies :D

the reason i'm asking for your suggestions/advice is because im not very familiar with tomahawks. i am also looking for something for my car kit/get home bag.

i know that some will suggest looking into the atc vtac or other tomahawks but im not able to spend alot at the moment so i'd like it if you can share your experiences with the above hawks.

thanks a bunch

JC

Don't bother trying to get a tac hawk that can double for survival work. Anything you get is going to do a crap job of it. Tac hawks just aren't well suited for the job.

Between those two I would try the CS vietnam hawk. It's a bit lighter and I like its looks more. Also I trust its steel more (CS is very tough 1055, SOG is 420 stainless).

One thing to consider is that the CS hawk does have a wood handle and the SOG hawk has a FRN handle. I don't care much either way but some people do.

which would you say is the tougher handle. the wood or the frn.?

Probably the FRN. A wood handle can be very durable though if you smooth out the wood, eye, and rim properly.

thanks dude, this is just the info i was looking for.

and im not looking to do a ton of wood work with it. maybe cut up some small saplings for an a-frame. and this would be a last resort kinda thing. thanks again for your input :D

If combat is (assumed) not your highest priority, you should consider something less tacticool. Like the Norse Hawk or the Trail Hawk from Cold Steel. They are light, can be used for chopping, clearing... and are usable as weapons.

But keep in mind:
Using something as weapon without proper training can be deadly to the user. Getting some skills in Escrima or other weaponbased systems are crucial.

ps. If you desire something "to punch holes", you could use a file on the hammer of the Trail Hawk.

That would take a long long long time and you would in the end have a very small spike.

The basics of tomahawk use are very simple. Put it in their face.

I think that a tomahawk is one of the more simple melee weapons. If its heavier you have to remember to keep it moving in circles redirecting the enrgey rather than stoopping and starting it.
Sog also has the battle Axe.
I dont know which brand though. I have a cold steel riflemans hawk thats ok. I dont think it came sharp enough but the quality seems ok.

i would go cold steel. inexpensive and tough as hell. at least my trail hawk is. as far as punching holes goes, there was a guy who used his one brick forge to draw the hammer poll out to a respectable sized spike. google "one brick forge" or get wayne goddard's "50$ knife shop" i would feel better about abusing the CS knowing that i paid less for it and its good carbon steel. just a thought. good luck brother.

I know this is about which one of the two however, Steve at Coal Creek Forge makes spike hawks for fantastic prices that would do anything u need it to do. So mabye you would like to consider something from another maker.

thanks for the input fellas. i actually have a cold steel frontier hawk which i like to use in the woods for light duty. i had to reprofile the edge quite a bit and did it by hand with a file and stone.

xjkid: i've been looking at the coal creek forge ones for a while however, i cant really justify spending that money or having a custom tomahawk just sit around in my trunk in my emergency bag :)

thx guys i think i've settled on the cs vietnam tomahawk. i always appreciate the information you guys give.

cheers,

JC

I can tell you the SOG Hawk Head has been a real treat to work with. It's tough as nails! I just had to make a durable shaft for it. 6A14V Ti.

jca 21 i see where your coming from, i planned on only usin mine for camping and such, now i take it everywhere and use it pretty much every weekend for a wide variety of activities, no matter what hawk u go with im sure you will end up using it for more than u think hahahahahaha. But seriously i got a sweet spike hawk from steve for 20 more dollars than i spent on my cs norse hawk.

Shop around, $50 for either of the hawks you mentioned is to much.
You should be able to get one for about $30.

That being said , I would get a cold steel trail hawk.
I think it would fit your intended uses better.
It is cheaper & stronger than either the cold steel VN hawk or the SOG. IMHO.

The trail hawk can be had for $25 dollars.
