I was looking at 3M for some diamond lapping film and noticed that they suggested CBN for grinding/polishing ferrous metals instead of diamonds. It caught my interest but I couldn't find any sheets or belts. Any suggestions?

i only use the suspension in my strop, the 1/8th micron, i do not know of any other cbn forms, but i have not looked either. imsorry for wasting your time, it must be frustrating

In my experience that is mainly when dealing with Diamond vs cbn plated steel that will be used with a power tool and doesn't apply to slower grinding methods like hand sharpening (i.e. Atoma, DMT, or WEPS diamond stones). I have a WEPS and the diamond stones are one of my favorite. All this being said, while I haven't found any CBN lapping film, I have found SiC lapping film (from "Tools for working wood" which is listed as being used for getting p"scary sharp" edge) and it works great. I have had excellent results with this lapping film vs. Lee valley's diamond film (and yes, I've tried both). Hope this helps.

I've used the aluminum oxide lapping film with good results. I'll take a look at the silicon carbide lapping film. My search results have mirrored yours regarding the CBN film. I was looking for a cost effective alternative to the diamond film so the information helps-thanks.
