Curious how you clean your deer knife prior to resheathing? While I always carry a fixed blade while hunting....especially the farther I get from a paved road. I usually use a Gerber Drop Point Gator for the field dressing. I then fold it up and put it in a zip lock bag until I get home.

How do you guys clean all the fat off in the field, especially if you have a tight fitting kydex sheath? I have never wanted to stick the dirty knife in there because I had no idea how I would really clean out the sheath later?

How do you do it?

I did pretty much the same thing as you last year with my Izula, I put it in a plastic bag until I got home and cleaned it before putting it back in the sheath.

Kydex i dont really worry about but leather I do. I carry alchol patches in pre wrapped packets i also carry pre wrapped hand wipes like they give you at a crab house. both can be bought in cases and they don't cost much and have many uses . the alchol cuts tallow and fat off the blade and the hand wipe finishes up nicely. when i get home a quick wash and oil . you never want to contaminate a leather sheath.

i cant imagine dragging a deer carrying a weapon and carrying a knife in a plastic bag what if ya slip

With Kydex, why not just some hot soapy water when you get home?

I just wiped knives on my pants and sheathed them, but I never carried a fancy sheath for that. Frankly the Cordura sheaths I did have still have blood and dirt on them.

+1. I'm not going to carve thanksgiving turkey with it. I just bring an old rag with me (did I just say that?), wipe the blade and shove it back in the sheath. I like cordura, so this process minimizes the blood and goo, but there's still a little left. If the sheath comes with an insert, then I just pop it out when I get home and hose it off. I like the "memories" of previous hunts on my knives. :)

i always have water so i wet my bandanna & wipe blade clean, if i do'nt have anything else i dry the blade on my pants.

You meant to say Gore-Tex technical wicking shell. A rag would hardly do.

Besides, my wife never really liked hunting.

FMAKNut ya gotta oil the blade especialy if it's carbon or damascus when ya get a chance but at least you are not contaminateing sheaths which mine are primarily leather. Sometimes I am sleeping in tents and then I will find water when I can clean and oil or tuff glide . when it is cold tallow and fat dont come off in cold water the alchol cuts it pretty good and this is what works best for me when it is not warm and there is no water near by

done alot of packing out and cuttin up critters rusted alot of good blades ive had the best luck with this method

would not think of carring a fixed blade in anything else but it's sheath on way out

I cut a stick lengthwise to remove most of the fat. Then cold water and a rag, dry off then back in the sheath. Palmolive/water then oil when I get home.

This is the advice I was looking for!! I will definately try this this year. My Gator is a Folder so it was safe. Thanks

I don't think the soap and water will get all the way to the bottom of the sheath. Blood and fat down there will rust even a stainless knife, not to mention go rancid IMO.

Wicked bull JParanee!

I wipe my knife on my pant leg to get most of the crud off, hten my sleeve for the final clean up:)

What nobody licks the blade clean like a real man?! Hehehe, I clean it on my pant leg the my shirt. Sometimes I remember to take the wipies.
