Custom Benchmade Griptilian vs Barrage

Hi,

I am ordering a custom made Benchmade knife. I have the money right now and I want to get myself a durable knife that will last a few years. I know that the barrage has an assisted open mechanism which I am partial to but don't know much of the other differences between the two. If anybody has recommendations that would be great. Also, are there any downsides to assisted open knives?

Also, what type of steel do you recommend. I'm thinking about ordering it with s30v steel. (It's a drop point blade btw).

Thanks,

I got the Grip with S30V

I have more than one of each in the Gold Class but I choose to carry the mini Barrage. It is gorgeous, fits my hand much better, is actually a little lighter than the mini Grip, even though it is a bit longer. I prefer M390 or M4 either one much better than s30v. You will not believe the edge retention. Whichever you choose, good luck. I am partial to Benchmade Knives.

Ok thanks. I dont see M390 or M4 steel on the options for custom knives. The only options are 154CM, D2, N680, and S30V.

I'm a mini griptiliian fan. When I bought a custom knife from them, that is what I chose. I don't care for assisted knives because I don't think you need assisted open on an axis knife. The barrage is a little heavier if that matters to you. In your case, it's obviously up to you. Both are great knives. I get a better grip on the griptilian as there isn't a lot in the design of the barrage handle that helps with the grip. No stippling in the plastic and little jimping on the spine of the barrage, but for a lot of people that does not matter. I don't know if you want to have a colored (other than black) blade, but that option is only available on the barrage.

Actually the Gold Class mini Grip weighs 3.6 oz. and the gold class mini Barrage weighs 3.36 oz. We all have different hands and they fit different knives, but for me, the mini Grip is just a little too small and so we each choose what we want to carry and use. My comments did not take into account customizing, so the blade steel is irrelevant. Personally, I would not give up M390 or M4 for a custom with lesser blade quality, but again it is all personal.

To get a Barrage with those steels, you have to get the SHOT show knife, or the Barrage with the silver bolsters. For some reason my mind just went blank, and I can't remember the model number

I guess I was thinking of the standard models I have owned....barrage - 4.2oz vs Griptilian 3.8 or the mini version 3.4oz vs 2.5. Those models are closest the custom models offered by Benchmades knife customizer on the benchmade website. In both cases I preferred the griptilian / mini griptilian partially due to weight, and partially due to purchase on the handle and the spine of the blade.

581 for the full size, 586 Mini

Both sport near FFG M390 blades

The 586-1401 SHOT show has G10 scales and bolsters instead of the G10/Aluminum of the regular production models, and IMHO is the best of the Barrage series (not including the gold models...)

Ok I am going to need some time to decide. Thanks for all your guys help. Quick question tho, I was watching a review about the barrage and grip and the reviewer said that benchmade wont ship any spring assisted knives to people unless you have a military or law enforcement credential. Is this true?

They won't ship Auto knives unless you have L.E/Military, OR you live in Oregon where it is legal to own and carry them :D

Got a custom mini Barrage a couple months ago in S30V. Great knife I carry every day. Highly recommended.
