I don't get what makes this knife worth the starting bid let alone what the guy says they cost retail. It seems like such a simple design. Sure it's got the Emerson logo on it but surely that doesn't justify the cost.

Good man, good knife, fanatic fans, hype, hype, hype. Why does a $500 custom folder go for over $1000? The in-group pushes the price up, and as long as they keep buying from each other, nobody notices. On E-bay, it stands out, but this is nothing new. It's good old supply and demand: Emersons sell.

i'll say one thing about the emerson spec wars they hold there value, ya will NEVER find a deal on a custom emerson, wont happen period end.

the CQC6 sells for less than $500 from emerson, go for $1200,$1300, even seen one sell for $1600, wow.

spec war knives are not cheap, they are good knives though, i have a CQC8 zero bevel myself.

Though far from an expert I have always attributed a main aspect of the price to the complexity of the design (with the exception of older knives). This knife seems fairly simple in that respect.

So, I guess the concensus is that it's the name that dictates the price for this particular knife.

For that particular knife???

No, i think it counts on every design from Emerson or Strider. Exept Busse. Ironically. Busses are mainly buildt to be used hard an dnot for beauty. But the new series is discussed under design aspect in german forum. A bit OT´. Don´t you think so?

Emerson is a great combat knife designer. But have you ever seen the fan community saying: "Oh Ernie, that one is a bit badly designed, you should better flaten the spine and don´t you see, the handle looks like a simple Ka-bar Impact series?"

I didn´t.

Limited supply, great demand.
His customs have a crisp, form-follows-function beauty about them. I'll buy one someday...

WOW! If cqc 6's sell for $500 from emerson and can be resold for $1,200-$1,300,put me down for 500 of 'em.Would they take that order, and whats the wait?

Five years or so. heh

I think 5 is optomistic I was reading a post the other day by someone who said they were at about 8-9 years on a custom Emerson knife they had ordered. That is whay people are willing to pay 2-3X the cost so that they can get one now.

Emerson isn't taking orders, so there is no way that you can get an order in. The only way to get one of his knives, is have an existing order in before he stopped taking them in 1999, or go to a show, put your name in a hat, and hope you get picked for the chance to purchase one of his knives. The CQC-6's are actually about $550 - $600 from Ernie now, depending on if it has a wave or not. When I ordered in 98, it was $500 for the CQC-6 and 8 that I ordered, and I'm still waiting. I believe that he has raised prices since then, but not sure.

It is pure supply and demand. This discussion can be applied to darn near any custom knife. When you get right down to it, you'd be hard pressed to justify the cost of almost any custom knife. The makers get the prices they ask because we are willing to pay the price.

There are some out there who say they would never pay whatever price for an Emerson or any other maker for that matter. That's all well and good, but the fact is, there are enough people out there that will pay the price and the secondary market reflects that. If you want one bad enough, you will pay the price. If you don't want one, you won't.

and i have never regretted buying my '8, i carry it daily, and have gotten plenty of use outta it, a great knife imho.
