I've been piecing this together over the last couple months and finally got it done this week.

First, a little backstory; my brother in-law is an avid gamer and truly dedicated to all things video-game related. He knows about my knife collection (i.e. obsession) and he is always curious to see what knife I'm carrying or what new knives I've picked-up. I know he has some cheap folders and a few novelty swords and daggers for display - but I thought it would be cool to piece together a decent quality knife for him, and customize it to reflect his personality and hobbies/interests.

Thus the Fallout "Grip-Boy" was conceived! :D

  • Benchmade Griptilian (551BKD2): Black BK1 coated D2 Steel Blade
  • Custom "Fallout" Scales w/ GITD Vault Boy
  • Custom bronze "Pip-Boy" Bead, nickel-plated, blued and hand-distressed
  • Custom bronze "Power Armor Helmet" Bead, nickel-plated, blued and hand-distressed.
  • Deep-carry pocket, modified with lanyard hole and hand-distressed

There really isn't much more to say; I nickel-plated the beads (which was an adventure in itself), then I blue'd and distressed them to have some of the bronze show through. I drilled a hole in the pocket clip to attach the lanyard (since the scales did not have a lanyard hole) and put it all together.

I also want to say that Benchmade's Customer Service was extremely helpful during this project. I had contacted them about getting the (user) 551BKD2 sharpened and refurbished under their LifeSharp warranty. After speaking with Tori in their CS Dept. - she walked me through how to complete the Service Request form, and send it to them to be serviced. Luckily, they are somewhat close to me, so the turnaround time was VERY quick (4 days). They were able to get the tough-as-nails D2 edge screaming sharp again, they cleaned everything, replaced all hardware: pivot, screws, bushings, omega springs, and even added a Black AXIS bar (per my request). They also sent a few extra pocket clips and asked that I send them pics and details once the "Grip-Boy" is completed. All in all, this further solidified my opinion of Benchmade as a top-notch company that truly stands behind their products and appreciates their clients.

Here are a few pictures I took yesterday. I am learning a new camera, so some of them are not as crisp/vivid as I'd hoped, but nonetheless I had fun setting up the "scene" for this :)

I might not care for Fallout, but that is some amazing work! Great job on that knife. It looks like it's been banging around the wastelands for a while.

dude thats amazing!! id kill to have a brother in law like you LOL.
Got any cute sisters? Just kidding, of course - but thank you for the compliment :)

Awesome work there, he's going to be thrilled.
Thank you! I'm sure hoping he likes it, but if he doesn't - I'll gladly keep it :D

Thanks man - while I didn't make any of the components by hand, it was definitely a fun project; and that's exactly the look I was going for!

Wow!!! That's unbelievable, great job Ben! Really looks like it survived a nuke, cool pictures too.

Best regards,

Joe

Love the thought and effort that went into this. Those are the best gifts in my opinion

Thanks GatorMedic - I like to find/make gifts that are personable and unique. I get WAY more gratification giving gifts and seeing people smile than I do getting stuff for myself.

Self expression in a very unique package. Beautiful knife!

Thanks jkarp - and it's functional, too! :D

Thank you (especially) Joe - the D2 Blade worked as a perfect mate to complete the whole ensemble. Thanks again, man!

wow! That is awesome!

Thank you Idaho RC! It's going to be hard to keep it in the safe until Christmas, haha! :)

This is beyond incredible. You should send this to Bethesda, I'm sure they would be super excited to see it.

That is perfect...
Absolutely stunning.
truly insane.

Thank you all for kind feedback, I'm very pleased how it turned out. He's definitely going to love it; we were at Best Buy a few days ago and he was looking at the different Fallout memorabilia/swag. He also just got a new pair of glasses in a distressed bronze color, so I know he's gonna dig the color-scheme.

I did post a pic on Twitter and Instagram for Bethesda and BM, but I never use those sites so I don't know if I "tagged" them correctly.
