Custom Knife Display Stands - Don Hanson Bowie Stand done

I'm in the process of making display stands for several of my custom knives. I finished the first last night and took a couple pics. This is Adam Desrosier's Damascus keyhole hunter.

As you can see, I'm still trying to decide how to display the sheath on this one. I originally designed it so that the tall antler tine slips through the belt loop on the sheath. However, I think I like the look of the sheath laying under the knife better.

Thanks to Kevin Jones for inspiration and a few tips he provided. I was originally planning to buy some of these from a vendor that makes them for Randall Knives. Then I saw Kevin's and figured if he could do it....

I am doing about 10 of these in different woods, shapes, etc and plan to display on shelves in my office. I need to add lighting inside these shelves. It's quite dark now. Some of the books will have to go to make room.

holy crap! What an office!!!

What Lorien said! Classy office! Nice stand I love that knife though and ordered one.

Beautiful! - if I was there with TEN knives on those shelves - no work would be getting done.....

Very nice, hope to see them done and displayed.

Thanks

I just received an email from Bing cautioning me on putting LED lights in the bookshelves. He had a bad experience with shrinkage on a mammoth folder that was under glass at a museum and lit by small LED. He suggested using mirrors to bring in light, which I think is a good idea. Anyone have suggestions on lighting that does not emit heat? Is there such a thing?

You need a bigger monitor. Everything else is fine. :D

Looks great man. Stellar setup you have there.

I finished the second display stand last night. This one is for Dave Lisch Pocket Bowie. The base is made from an old slab of walnut burl. It was full of worm holes that I filled with crushed malachite and brass shavings before finishing it.

This is what the walnut looked like before I finished it.

Very Cool Mark I am honored to have my knife on a stand such as that in that office

I appreciate the comments about my office. I apologize. I shouldn't have posted a photo of where these stands were to be displayed. I do still have a questions about lighting and heat on materials.

The wood in the stands is stunning...but...does anyone think there is a risk that the stands themselves may distract somewhat from the knives? I was thinking this more for the first stand, which is quite light, highly patterned both in form and figure, and is fairly high contrast, while the knife on show is relatively small and dark and has less contrast between its main aesthetic components.

As stand alone objects, the stands are quite something :thumbup:but as things to show off the knives, I find myself not knowing which to look at, the stand, or what is on it.

CClaycomb, I do see what you are saying regarding making these stands too ornate, thereby competing with the knives I'm trying to show off. I like the overall look of both and was trying to make the entire piece look like art. (My wife can appreciate it more that way than displaying a knife on a shelf alone).

I chose the light colored wood for the Desrosier knife specifically because it was black and added the charred edges to compliment the blackwood. Perhaps it is too much? I will say that the effect you see is far more noticeable in these up-close photos than it is when viewing them from a normal distance. For example, viewed from across the room, you can't really see the fancy burl in the walnut. It's only when you view it up close. Woodworking is one of my hobbies so I probably go overboard just to see if I can do it.

The next one I'm doing is for a fancy Walrus Hunter by Jerry McClure. I may take your advice and try a plain dark wood. Stay tuned. I do appreciate your comments.

Fantastic displays. They are equally fine counterparts to those excellent knives. You've got some skills man! :)
