Is it just me or are these new custom Striders like way overpriced!? I understand that Mick is hand making these and they have the "cool" nightmare grinds and some jazzy lanyard, but they just seem almost ridiculously overpriced?! Most of them are basically their standard SNG or SMF handles with a custom blade and they re like a grand or so! Honestly its kind of turning me off to Strider. But I guess if people buy them thats all they care about. Also I still have that rumor in the back of my mind about Mick falsely claiming he served in Spec Ops or sumthing of the sort?!

Sometimes I wonder why we discuss things.
I think there will be 3 camps for this one.
People who like strider, feel its worth it even if they personally can't afford it and don't want to be hassled for buying something overprice or not.
Then there will be people who feel its a rip off, not worth it etc., and will cite a variety of claims and facts about strider and why they are bad.
Then there will be the fence sitters, who like to discuss and argue about things but don't have a strong personal opinion either way.

And they will all duke it out among themselves.

The time/skill of the knifemaker grinding the blade is the main thing you're paying for in most custom knives; it's nothing specific to Mick Strider/Duane Dwyer customs. Many makers of custom folders use CNC to cut the scales and various other parts -- Rick Hinderer and RJ Martin, just to name two very well-known guys. And, of course, depending on how skilled, well-known, in demand, etc. the maker is, the more his time is worth and the more he (or his dealers) can charge for his time. Just to use the example of Hinderer and Martin again, Rick's customs sell from dealers for significantly more than most MSC/DDCs, and RJ's go for around the same amount (starting around $800 and going up to $1000+).

What a knife is worth is what the market is willing to pay. I personally wasn't too impressed by the $2000 price tag on a Ken Onion Wrinkle with S30V and titanium handles, and assisted opening. But since it seems to be sold now, I guess somebody felt it was worth the price.

I personally feel I can get more "bang for my buck" on a full custom for less. Even paying for the steel the maker isn't used to working with, the blanchard grinding, and the heat treatment, the total price for my M390 custom titanium handle flipper would still fall around the $700 mark.

Only thing is, that other custom will never be that knife that you considered earlier. No other people would make a custom SmF or XM-18/24 for obvious reasons. If you have to have that XM-18 in particular, go for it. If not, maybe set your sights on the ZT 056X. Ditto for the SmF. If the custom isn't worth it, get a production one. Or wait for another batch with a rare steel(S110V, CPM-M4, CPM-3V), as the price typically stays the same and people are much more willing to fork over the cash for one(even the custom versions).

To which I will add: And no one's opinion will change.

...A lot of discussions on internet forums are like this.

i will simply put it this way.
i WILL NOT spend money on a custom strider. production is just fine for me and you get the same heat treat.

i am a spyderco fan, and a strider fan.
I will put my striders up against any other knife just like i will my spydies. different tools for different jobs i say.

For custom knives...MS + DD sure do churn em' out.
Overpriced for me. Especially with Strider's newly stained reputation.

forgive and forget my friend
they make high-speed tools that work for hardcore individuals.

Sorry, couldn't resist. But yeah to be honest it looks like they are in the ballpark range with other custom makers (neuron's post nailed it dead on). If there is a high demand for them and they are selling, more power to 'em.

They are like anything that is expensive, and what expensive is will vary depending on the person. ;)

Overpriced on the other hand is an opinion mostly buy those who can't afford that product at the price in question so they target it saying it's over priced.

The same things happen with a lot of products, not just knives either.

It usually comes down to jealousy and or anger because they just can't or won't afford the item in question knowing to themselves that if they really could afford to buy it they would own it and be bragging about it.

But since they can't they target it, bash it, compare it to cheaper items saying they are just as good or better just to make themselves feel better when they are the real problem, not the product.

There are a lot of people who can see right through these types of peoples BS.... ;)

There are a lot of things that I can't afford to get and never will, but I accept that and move on, it's called life.... ;)

This.

If the market is willing to pay the price then they are not over priced. If the market is not willing to pay the price then the prices will be reduced until the knife (or any other item) is not "over priced."

I think they are over priced. Even considering the current custom knife market. And yes I briefly owned a DDC and comparing it to a custom by Kirby Lambert, David Mosier, etc.. was embarrassing. I could hardly see where the extra money was comparing it to my factory built Strider. The DDC wasn't in the same league for fit and finish and build quality as some of the custom knife builders for the same money. I love my production SNG CC but The Strider customs should only be about 10% above the cost of the factory knife. If your looking for a cool multi grind custom, check out one of Kirby Lambert MGT.

I know a lot of guys who think all my knives are overpriced. They carry cheap, readily available, over the counter knives.

Nothing wrong with that. For the most part, they pretty much cut into stuff with their cheaper knives just as well as I do with my expensive ones. Does that make my knives overpriced? According to them it does.

It's all relative to your own experience and opinion. . .

I dont care if they build good knives. If they have lied about their military service i have lost all respect for them! And will not buy another strider! Esav can I change my BF name?

Strider customs have always been really expensive. I haven't noticed a price increase.

Little too rich for my taste but hey it sells. I'll stick to my production striders.
