As most of you know, I asked the prominent cutleries to propose a knife for us, for this year.

Three of them have responded, Case, Canal Street and Great Eastern.
Canal street is the first to respond, and have done some actual prototypes, thanks Wally Gardiner, and to their bright young cutler, Eric! A class act!!

Here are their entries. Two versions of the same essential pattern, as you can see, they have offered alternate, pinned shields, and a lowered sheepfoot blade, with the pull on the back:

The beauty of getting a proposal from the cutleries is we get a knife they would delight in making, and we get a very attractive price. In this case we also get a creative solution to the question "what should the next Forum knife be??"!!

I have to admit to liking the one in shadow better. A fancy hard wood would look good. Maybe Micarta or G-10 in a color other than black, blue or orange maybe..

Thanks again for your time Charlie, can't wait to see what the other two come up with.

Best regards

Robin

Newbie question... in this thread, and in the other BF 2015 knife thread, I see this Canal Street Cutlery prototype referred to as a "shadow" pattern. Would someone be kind enough to explain what that means? Thanks in advance. I'm trying to learn!

Shadow pattern refers to NO BOLSTERS. A jack knife (all blades pivoting from the same end) with only a bolster at the pivot end is called a Barehead (no head bolster).

Shadow pattern means no bolsters.
If you look at the pictures posted by Charlie, the top knife is the shadow version, while the bottom knife has bolsters.
They both look nice, but I prefer the shadow version myself ;)

Thanks, Black Mamba and quattromori! I thought it might have something to do with the lack of bolsters, which, I must say, looks a little odd to me.

I learned something... it's a good day!

I'm kind of torn. I like the looks of the shadow pattern, but I'd be more comfortable with bolsters, as I tend to drop my knives, and I'd be more confident in a bolstered handle surviving a drop intact than a bare wood end.

If someone can assure me that I'd not crack the handle if I dropped it, I'd be all over that bare-headed, bare-bottomed knife. (head <----> bottom? is that the designations? or is it head --- tail? Really, I should know...)

Edited to add:
I do have to say, I'm happy to see an offering from CSC, again. With the pinned shield, it takes care of my only concerns I've had with them, as I've lost 2 shields on their non-pinned knives.

Hmmmm. I think I would like the bolster version were the wood ebony. But with a broader grain, lighter wood, I like the shadow pattern. Tough choice, for sure.

I'm digging the blade layout, Charlie. Clip and sheepsfoot (my two most used blades) with both nicks on the mark side, and single spring so a relatively slim carry!

I like the shadow pattern with the tiger stripe wood as shown in the top of the first photo. The brass shield suits the scales. IMO... brass pins would better match the shield and scales. The blade pins could be smaller and maybe a birds-eye style. The top of the tang on the master blade is flush with the handle but tang on the secondary blade is prominent. A slightly narrower secondary blade with the nick on the reverse side would allow it to sit lower in the handle. Just my 2p

I think I'm actually leaning towards the shadow pattern. There is just something about the long/ narrow bolster that I don't like. Still, I'd be happy to carry either of those. Thanks for all your work thus far.

So there are pulls on opposite sides, I like that. And I really like the shadow pattern out of these two. Are there any other wood options? (Besides ebony). I realize there are other protoypes coming, I ask for curiosity's sake

Those are truly beautiful! I'd be happy with either. I do very much want to see the other proposals though.
