Hi folks -

I recently picked up this beautiful CK&T Brend folder from my friend John Kiedaisch of JK Handmade Knives.

There are few of these out there, but I am lucky to have one in my collection, and I intend to put this heavy-duty folder to use.

Here are a few pictures I took this evening -

And here with a Spyderco Ti Military and an AG Russell Acies:

This knife just exudes quality, I am very impressed with the build and quality, and it has a very cool grind with a nicely done swedge.

Hi Michael -

Not that I am aware. The web site does not list any products for sale.

My example is ser. no. 0023.

I have no background knowledge of this knife, and there is very little information to be found on the internet either.

There were a few variants of this knife. Some had grooves in the handles, some were black coated (blade and handles), and some had carbon fiber inserts in the handles. Then there was a button fired dual action automatic version, which I owned for a time.

Fantastic quality. Rock solid lockup, zero blade play, and effortlessly smooth action. The only non-custom I've handled that can compare is a Sebenza. If it didn't have a bead blasted blade, I'd probably still own it.

Really good looking knife there ! It's lines are simple and solid looking , I would be proud to own one.

Thanks for sharing.

Looks like the screws are aftermarket.

Thanks! Good information. I have seen one other (pictures of it) and a youtube vid that show the grooves in the handle, and also one has a pocket clip. Appreciate the additional info.

Hi Charlie Mike -

I think JK bought this new from Cutters, and these screws do look like factory stuff, the heads are really thin. I will ask John if he thinks the screws are factory.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Tonight I will clean my camera out to get all the crud out of it so my photos are not so full of dirt spots.

the flat scales and screws, are a little off set off all other version

could be a early one ?

here is one off the more common non auto version

and yes, Walter Brend can grind a blade very nice

nice catch

The knife is original as I got it from the old To The Hilt knife store many years ago. Even then the price was $285.

NICE! I have a double action version.

yeah, i was thinking the rear looks too rounded off and the screws seem too generic hardware store type. i thought maybe its the newer comeback version since i heard a year or two back he was in business again. I wouldn't mind getting mine tuned up, the back screws are stripped.
But it makes sense if yours is the earlier first versions from around 2000, esp with no clip yet.

Brend allowed CKT to make these as a semi custom offer, i dont think he makes many folders all by hand esp with titanium framelocks, too much machine work. He's more of a grinder and makes a hell of a fixed blade.

i heard with a few of the very first CKTs, he offered to hand grind the blade but those are highly polished with real deep grinds common with his customs. Almost everyone that i've heard has owned a CKT Brend folder (manual or custom) thinks their blade was hand ground by Brend himself but most aren't.

There were much more possibilities for this when he did a joint effort with woodard/white wolf knives (?) back in the late 90's for the just automatic version of his famous folder. I owned two and they went for about 200-250 back then and are worth over a grand now to collectors because many of the THOSE blades where hand ground by him and the alluminum handles manufactured by whitewolf as well as the knife put together by them.

wish i kept em but traded one back for store credit towards a gun and sold the other years later for 500 to a guy i thought was a bigger knife nut (and sucker) than even me at the time. LITTLE DID I KNOW. . . . .

Anyway these are still cool and the Brend design (even if not ground himself) stands on its own. He's pretty picky now about who can offer his non customs, remember the early benchmade 600, i have one of those too.
The double action i have now by CKT is my sweetest / meanest show off / bragging knife and keeps me from buying other impulse purchases cause i compare everything to this ones quality. It was worth the 350, in the end it SAVED me money.

ENJOY

Hi Guys -

This one is an older one, made somewhere around 2003 as far as I can gather. The serial number is #0023, and I know JK has had it quite some time.

I sent Tom an email, we'll see if he replies. He is a member here, so I also sent him a link to this thread.

I have no doubt that this knife is how it was delivered from CK&T, but I will report if Tom is kind enough to reply.

Thanks again for all the info on this one - it is really nice, and it makes a fine companion for my JK Ti folder.

I really like that. The overall look makes me think of Bob Terzuola's knives.

The lack of a drilled hole at the end of the lock bar cut out looks cleaner IMO.

Why is the area near the pivot milled down (towards the lock bar cut out)?

That's where the pocket clip would go, if it was attached. mqqn, did yours not come with a clip?

Hi Planterz -

No, this one did not come with a clip.

Hi Guys -

I emailed Tom and he replied very quickly.

Tom is still making these in both the manual and the DA models, he said he just has not been keeping up the web site.

You can contact Tom via email at tom at cuttersknifentool.com.

Tom indicated that he started making these in late 2003, and that he uses all custom hardware. He said his knives should have flat-headed torx fasteners, so my copy may have aftermarket hardware.

I sent Tom a link to this thread, so he may just post a reply here.

Also, just to be clear, I am 100% satisfied with the knife I have just the way it is, original hardware or not - it is really a great knife - thanks John for the trade, and Thanks Tom for the great folder!

best regards -

Hey Andy,
made it over here to say thanks and read the thread. Thanks to some of you other guys for ownership and previous ownership of my blades. The knife you got Andy has had the handle rounded at the butt and handle screws changed, also all the #2s either DA or MAs were shipped with pocket clips.

I do remember sending a few pocket clip spacers to 2-the hilt so the clips could be removed. Planterz you were right in you assumption that it should have had a pocket clip and Charlie your right about the screws.

Planterz you can still get a DA the same way with zero B/P solid B/L-up and smooth action with a satin blade, let me know(LOL). Firebolt thanks for putting up the pic for the comparison.

Now To Nostimos, hey man send that thing in so I can make it new for ya. The only thing I ask my customers is to add a shipping label for return shipping, the refurb is free. CK&T 4711 N AUSTRALIAN AVE #12 W.P.B. FL 33407. A little history, I bought the right to build the #2 folders from Walter for $5,000 in 2002 and went to Walters in SC to close the deal.

I told Walter that I wanted to do a Ti frame-lock version of his Ti handle liner-lock custom that he was building at the time and having the Ti handles CNC made for himself some where in SC but he decided they were to much of a pain in the ass to keep making.

So I told him I wanted to do a DA first since there was only 1 maker out there that was doing a Ti frame lock DA at that time and that was Butch Vallotton , the knife was the DA he did for 98 SOF convention.

I offered the DA at the 2002 Blade show for $450 and the MA at the 03 show for $298, both have increased in price somewhat. The only thing Walter was critical on was the recurve and grind of the production CNC blades which is really the only thing production about the entire knife. He wanted to keep those sharp points in the handle design but I had to round them with a good radios to brake it down a little and he thru a fit over it.

Tha'ts about all the impute Walter ever had in these knives other then hand grinding 15 polished and 5 satin finished custom blades.

That's all the hand ground blades that were done by Walter for these models. Hey Nostimos thanks for considering it to be your SWEETEST of pieces for bragging on, THANK YOU its statements like that and of Planterz and Andy that keeps us doing what we do as knife-makers. If any body has a question please feel free to ask in this thread or, My email is tom@cuttersknifentool.com

Hi Tom -

Thanks for posting here!!

Awesome information and I appreciate your posting it all here!

I really love this knife, and it is good to know that it was modified slightly on the butt end - I had not really noticed that when looking at the pictures of the other examples.
