Last month for his 61st birthday I bought him a US AMRY Case mini blackhorn, and it quickly became his favorite knife.
Sure it was special because I gave it to him and because it says US ARMY on it, but he just really loved it's size shape and thinly ground blade.

He appears to have somehow lost it when we were out at lunch and shopping today, because it was nowhere to be found when he got home.
He's going to keep looking in case it's somehow in his truck somewhere but I went ahead and just ordered him a new one.

He never really liked carrying a knife loose in his pocket , but I guess the mini blackhorn hit the nail on the head and it was his " pocket knife " every day since he got it.

Hopefully he doesn't loose this one, maybe I'll make some kind of suspension clip for him this time.

They're a cool lightweight little knife, I may have to think about getting myself a plain mini blackhorn.

Well, kudos to you for getting Dad a new knife for his birthday. I wish I could still do that. That mini blackhorn looks like a handy little knife. I may have to pick one up to add to my Case collection. I like the rounding of the handle to avoid a possible hot spot. You mentioned that he didn't like to carry a knife loose in his pocket. Was Dad a sheath/belt carry kind of guy? If so maybe a small sheath for belt carry. Something else that might help would be a lanyard since the knife can accommodate one. It may help to avoid future loss. Thanks for posting.

He carried a cheapo modern type before I got him more into good ol' traditionals, but generally he never liked loose in pocket.
At work he has the leatherman 300 on his belt that I got him for Christmas as well as a Victorinox tinker.
I suppose that's why he didn't ask me to make him a sheath for it like he normally would, that and the weird extra inner pocket in his work pants that perfectly fit this knife. It's not a watch pocket, I don't know what it is but it perfectly fit this knife and he got used to it being in his pocket.

Anyways , after this incident I bet he'll want a sheath for the new one to prevent loss when he's out and about in normal pants without a special pocket.
I've got a leather working tool kit on the way, so maybe I'll use the stamps and such to make this one a bit fancier than the simple sheaths I normally do.

I went to my nephews ballgame with my dad last summer and he pulled out some broken SAK knockoff, so I bought him a pioneer aloe for Xmas. Knowing my dad, he is still probably carrying the old one...

Glad to hear your dad enjoyed his!

Reminds me of my uncle.
I got him a Victorinox tinker the year before last thinking he'd really appreciate it's versatility, but he never even opened it :( :D his youngest son probably has it now.
It turns out he likes smaller multi bladers and was still carrying an uncle Henry from the gift set my dad got him a few years ago, I got him a little a Buck Deuce last Christmas and it went right into his pocket.

I bought my dad a Case small Texas jack for Christmas years ago but he still carries his old Imperial barlow he's had for years. He'll probably give the Case back to me someday.

Both good choices for a 2 blade slipjoint, I have both and love them.
My dad loved mine when I showed it to him, but said it was a bit too nice looking for him to put to real work.

I wonder what it's like to be normal enough to stick with one knife as long as it cuts.
We can only speculate ;)
When I see those old blades worn down
to toothpicks, with smooth pocket worn bone covers, all I want is to have one like that myself to leave as a relic to my own kids one day. Unfortunately humans don't have that long of a lifespan, and there are too many great knives :D

The mini Blackthorn is a great little knife; versatile blade shape, comfortable handle and rides nice and light in the pocket. That's probably why I lost mine....
A suspension clip is a good idea, I use one with my SAKs when I'm in a situation where I might lose them. I like the way they keep the knife upright and out of the bottom of the pocket. Useful if you carry a lot of stuff or need to quickly retrieve it.

That looks really great. That should help with both retrieval and keeping it from sliding out of the pocket. Nice work!

Thanks.
I'm definitely happy with the results function wise , the fit is pretty much perfect.
I just got the leather craft tool set in yesterday and am still getting used to using the stamps, but I think the first two sheaths have definitely turned out better than anything I've made before.

That sounds like my dad to a "T" !! I bought him a bunch of nice Case's over the years for birthday or Christmas presents ... he wouldn't carry them for fear of losing them (must be a Dad thing !). He always carried those $2 Walmart chinese junk knives ... they did the job, and worst of all, he never lost the crappy ones... so I have a drawer full of them.
