I'm wanting a new wrist watch, and I am considering the "Big Black ION" (yeah, that's the name of it) by Dakota Watch Company, especially for around 60 bucks
However, I don't personally know anyone who has ever owned a Dakota watch, so I was wondering if anyone here has an opinion of them.

I have one, about 4 ears. Good edc watch. Nice basic watch. I like the recessed crown. Gets my thumbs up.

I put a Maratec NATO style watch band on it. Very well constructed band.

Well I did shatter the crystal when it dropped on the patio, but that was an operator error. So its at the jeweler. Can't wait to get it back.

I say go for it. If you look around, I've seen them a little cheaper.

Thanks Ric. They just look like good, no-nonsense watches to me. I've owned a few with all the bells and whistles, and I'm tired of trying to remember which button performs which function. I just need the time and date mostly.

I know what you mean about the bells and whistles. I like a simple analog clock or watch because I can glance at it and know what time it is without having to think about numbers in my head. i can also see the hands well enough when I don't have my glasses on.

I do recommend replacing the band with a Maratech band. They are built to last. I used to go through one or two watchbands/year, the drug store specials. The Maratec shows almost no wear after several years.

I have a 30 year old Casio that I have probably spent 2x the original cost on replacing the band and battery over the years. It still is alive and ticking....

Those are some great watch bands. I recently picke up one of these from County Comm in black for one of my other watches, and so far I really like it: http://www.countycomm.com/silicone.htm
The black nylon cloth band that originally came with the watch looked frayed after just a few months, and the cloth soaked up water and sweat. Smelled funky after a while, especially in the summer. The silicone of the new band is thick, won't absorb any moisture, has a secure double locking clasp and looks much better. It also looks like it will last me a good long while.

I got mine from WestcoastTime. I just periodically wash my band to keep the stink factor down.

I should be getting my watch back tomorrow. Been using the Casio.

I have a Dakota (Fisherman II I think). It keeps perfect time. The crystal scratches easily (since it's on a belt loop). I sent it back and they replaced it with a new one a couple of years ago (About $20). It's almost time to do it again. Nice watch although one needs a magnifying glass to see the digital functions.

Not a bad price to replace a crystal. Dakota seems like a company that is easy to deal with.

They have a reputation for having good CS. I have a mechanical watch of theirs I bought over 10 years ago that still works great.

You might want to browse Amazon for some other options, they sometimes have specials. I bought an Invicta Pro Diver with an automatic movement for $70. It doesn't need batteries , it's mechanical but automatically winds as you wear it. Many of the Invicta watches have Japanese automatic movements. My wife has been wearing a pro diver for 2 1/2 years that's been running non stop.

But Dakota probably has better CS than Invicta.... lots of choices out there. I buy almost as many watches as knives, it's another sickness of mine:)
