After handling chop tests on yellow pine and epay with ease, Scott decided to try this Damascus Diamondback on a sweet gum that needed chopping down . . . sans a handle.

It passed the chop test with flying colors and still shaved afterwards.

This Diamondback will be hand-sanded, dressed in African Blackwood, and then shipped to France later this week.

All he needs is a big flat tail and some buck teeth!! :D
(Of course, you knew somebody would say that.)
Great job and it appears he nailed the geometry quite well.
That's a big job for a knife that size.

Handsome, imposing blade profile, gorgeous damascus, impressive performance. That knife has it all! Oh yeah, except a handle. ;) :D

I do not know if you know how important the cutler wife in their lives.
I know thank you very much Lydia .
thank you for these beautiful pics ...

Is that your knife Parfums95?

Thanks for showing the pics of the perfomance test, Lydia! I hope we get to see the finished knife as well :)

Very impressive. Can't imagine trying to cut that tree without a handle on the knife. Looking forward to the finished work and hopefully equally well dressed.

Thanks so much, 'The Wife', for posting these.....such a fine blade and so performance oriented.

Congrats to the new owner.....I'm jealous. ;)

Quite a blade! Great Damascus, great lines and a proven hopper. Sure am looking forward to seeing it completed with one of your hand-hugging carved handles.

you have an interesting technique!
makes me think of this;

As a user and abuser of custom and/or handmade knives, I especially appreciate cutlers who take the performance of their products seriously. I have experienced letdowns, which proper testing could have diffused beforehand. I also have experienced the absolute pinnacle of the cutler's trade, which is the primary reason this interest is so consuming. Performance is my thing, and this type of cutting is part of what I do. The other part...kills knives- almost none are immune to damage, so far:devilish:

Just posted two finished pics at the end of the first post if anyone is interested.

Very nice. I really like the Damascus and finish the way you finish the guard lugs nice and thin.
Darcy:)
