Hey guys New here on the Forums and am trying to get some Damascus in Bar strock to make rings on a lathe. I've talked to people on other forums and they said that this would be the best place to ask. I'm looking for 1" or 1.25" round (1.25" Preferred). It dose not have to be the greatest or the nicest steel because it is not for knives. Someone said that I would have a better bed looking for some in a tube, but the only thing is that I need it to have thick walls that will fit around the finger or different sizes. As long as the inside diameter is less the .5" then I can make sizes 2-12 witch is in the zone for most common sizes (7 for Women, 10 for Men). People where telling me that maybe I can find a piece of scrap Damascus from a barrel, but from what I've heard most of the barrels where shotgun barrels and I don't think that would work; Barrel Picture - (http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...TkCYQvpU08aSaA) Also I dont want to be spending $180 on a 10" piece like on ebay. I need to keep it cheaper I am on a budget. I was also thinking of doing Titanium rings and anodizing them for Christmas gifts but I dont know where to get that in round bars either.

I asked this on in the General Knife Discussion and where to put it and Shorttime said here would be a good place. Burl Source said that Damasteel makes it in pipe and Round bar form. http://tigheknives.com/DamasteelCanadaSteelHome.html I am going to try to call them tomorrow and get a price. Do you guys think this is the best place to try to get it from.

I was also wondering where I would get Ti in bar form because I would like to make rings from that aswell. Im kinda bummed out on boring old aluminium and steel.

Thanks guys any help would be great.

You might try Chad Nichols. Just google Chad Nichols Damascus. He makes some great stuff.

Or try Dave Lisch. Honestly speaking, to make Damascus rings there's a bit that goes into laying out the pattern to get what you want.
I have a damascus ring Dave made and the way he has a twist and a fold makes the top face of the ring look like a star bursting and the bottom looks like it was stitched together.

If all you want is a random pattern that's hit or miss on style then I'd try to buy some ends of billets from knifemakers. Guys that make big billets for feather patterns will likely have drops big enough to work.

Other than taking a lesson from Dave to learn myself, he'd be the first guy I'd buy damascus for a ring from. Second would be Delbert Ealy. www.ealyknives.com

BTW, $180 for 10" of damascus round bar sounds reasonable to me depending on the quality.

Try Alpha Knife Supply for the titanium. Neither of these metals will be inexpensive in that size. Frank

Mike Turner or Randy at HHH knives both turn out some excellent Damascus and could probably help ya out. PM either one.

As a 40 year goldsmith, I can tell you that damascus rings are not as simple as you describe. Delbert Ealy makes them, as do some others. Just making a cylinder of steel damascus will not make a ring. You will either have to make a lining shell in gold or silver, or use stainless damascus. Make a plain ring from a round bar or piece of steel and see how it does on your finger after a few days....not well. If you want nice rings, precious metal mokume gane is what you need to learn.

BTW, $180 for a 10" round of 1" regular damascus is a good price, not expensive. In stainless damascus, plan on spending far more.

In titanium damascus ( timascus) plan on spending about $125 for a small piece of sheet twist style timascus ( 1.8X1.5X.280) that will make two or three 6mm wide bands ( which will be a lot of work and precise cutting). I have no real idea what 1" round timascus rod would run, but about $100 and inch would be a good guess.

BTW, titanium rings are a waste of time. People who buy them end up hating them. The impression is that they are going to be strong and wear resistant as well as feather light. The reality is that they are only light weight. They scratch and bend just like aluminum.

You haven't filled out your profile, so I don't know who you are ,how old you are, or where you are. I have a box of damascus ring blanks somewhere. I made them for a project several years back. While you fill out your info, I'll try and see if I can find them in the store today.
What forging equipment do you have? You will need tapered and straight forging mandrels ( and a cradle), a small forge that reaches 2200F, a small anvil, shaping hammers, 1/2 round fullers, etc. Also, what sliver/gold smithing skills do you have?

Wow Bladsmth Thats a lot of info. And hahah Im am by no means an expert I have been making them on the lathes at school old pieces of junk. ahah But Ive been getting by and making some really nice rings. I just thought it would be something neat to make for my family members for Christmas presents.
