I got a question about a pair of boots I've been interested in for a long time. I really like the looks of the Danner Mountain Lights but I wanted to hear what people think before buying a 200 dollar pair of boots. Are they any better than Timberland, Salomon, or Vasque and if so how. Thanks

They are great boots. I get hundreds of miles out of each pair before they need re-soling, then they're good for a couple hundred more. Don't know if they're 'better' than other high end brands or not, just depends on which model/brand fits the best. I've been wearing Mountain Lights for so long now that my feet have formed to the boot shape, and nothing else feels right. :)

I'm especially interested in the arch supports, they look interesting, I really like shoes/boots with good arch support, also how "high" do the soles make you fell compared to say Vasque Sundowners or Timberland Eurohikers, what I'm trying to ask is do they make you feel like some Lowa boots in that you feel like the boot makes you feel as if you feet are on top of the boots instead of in them. Also how waterproof are the Danners and how long to break in, sorry for so many additional questions.

Danner makes some of the finest footwear I have ever seen. The outdoor sporting goods store where I worked had to unfortunatly drop Danner, not because of it's lack of being a great boot, price wise it was too expensive a boot to compete with Rocky or Chippewa boots. If you get a pair of Danners you'll have a class act boot. The others are good too but Danner is hard to beat.;)

You can't go wrong with Danner....get them one size larger than you wear....
that goes for any boot ....your feet will swell after a few hours of walking or being on your feet for a few hours. They are made to last ....old saying a cheap pair of boots is an expensive pair of boots.

The arch supports aren't anything special, but the boot is rather flat without them. Any off-the-shelf or custom-fit arch supports will work just as well as Danner's.

They aren't a tall-soled boot, but perhaps a tad more than the Sundowners. They also feel more stiff and supportive than the Sundowner.

Waterproofing isn't great, even with the Gore-Tex lining. If you step in standing water and the boots aren't coated, you'll probably get wet feet. But just hiking in the rain or brushing against wet leaves is no problem.

Since I've been wearing Mountain Lights for almost twenty years my feet are perfectly formed to the boot's shape, and I don't need any break-in time at all.

Not all Danner's are good boots---I have a pair of GTX's that have all but made it to the garbage can-----too stiff and have never formed to my feet-----wore them constantly for about 6 months and they never got comfortable----granted they aren't Mountain lights----but the $100+ I paid for them they should be better than this.

The blanket statement that all Danner's are good boots is BS---yes they make some good boots---just be carefull which ones you buy.

Have the Danner Mtn Lights and dont care for them nearly as much as my Italian made Vasque Sundowners ... unfortunately the Sundowners are now made in china and dont hold a candle to the old ones.
