While roaming around I found http://sciplus.com/
On there I found (on 'Other DC Motors)
Run, Robot, Run
This permanent–magnet treadmill motor is rated at 120 VDC, 4800 rpm, 14 amps, 2 hp. It runs from 12 to 120 VDC, (12 volt RPM is 590 RPM) though, and is great for robotics because of its incredible torque. Leeson Electric‘s part #098231, it is 8” x 5” dia, 16 lbs, with (2) 6” leads. The keyed double–sided shaft is 2–1/4” x 5/8” dia. A great price, whether it’s a new motor or one of the very clean takeouts (which may or may not come with a removeable pulley and fan).

They don't say anything about a controler but I'm sure that someone on this forum that is smarter than me (not that hard!) can figure out how to make this motor work. 2 HP's, Wow.

Hopefully, Lynn

No one has my excitement about a 2 HP veriable speed motor for 50 bucks? Is this something everyone has, or have I got some disease that precludes anyone from answering?

That's a great price on the motor but the controllers are the expensive part.I'm still in the process of trying to use the control panel and motor from a discarded treadmill on my grinder.

Lynn, diseases? I'm not a doctor but I play one on tv. My leeson man tells me that your motor is a special made for the treadmill co. It is a variable torque model. That means it's torque develops at the same rate roughly as the speed; i.e. 1/2 speed=1/2 torque. 4800 is real fast, most guys run about half speed on a 2500 rpm motor. Maybe not the best choice for a grinder. Leeson 2hp / 120 volt controller $210 M

i e-mailed rfink and he said that its a bit fast but with a vsc, and a 2" pulley on the motor and a 3" on the grinder it should bring the speed down to a good level. if i want it slower i can go to a 4" which cut the 4800 in half. they did not have a controler. i bought one anyway and will have at my door for under $60. that is worth a litle extra hassle. if the leeson vsc is $210 it means you have a 2hp var, for under $300 with lots of low end touque. :)
