Decent quality assisted opening Karambit or Tac Knife?

Hello, all. I've only recently become very fond and appreciative of knives. I have only previously owned crappy Chinese knockoffs, and by this point I'd really like to own something of intermediate quality as an EDC. I say "intermediate quality" because I cannot currently afford to just drop $300+ on a good knife (yet).

I'm particularly fond of assisted opening Tac-Knives that offer a windshield-breaker/Kubotan for usage as a blunt and non-lethal defense option, and preferably with a serrated blade for utility purposes.

I'd also love a good Karambit for it's shape (hawk-billed?), but for a practical EDC one I think I'd rather opt for a fixed blade model that sports a sturdy hip sheath to avoid anything with a flimsy blade wobble or crappy screws/awkward grip. I understand I may not own one for quite a while as the only praised models are well out of my price range or complete garbage for such a specialized design. :grumpy:

Can anyone pitch some things that could fit my tastes with about $150 to spend with a blade length less than 5 inches? Any store that could accept paypal would be a miracle as well!

Thank you for reading! I hope to learn a lot from you all!

Buy a 511 kerambit and send it to me for a wave job.

Ah, and I assume that would mean modifying it to have a pocket-drawn assisted opening notch? How is that done?! With Welding?

Regardless that knife is straight up my alley, and beautiful to boot. Do you know of any place that offers them or ones of similar quality that accepts paypal?

Please pardon my ignorance. After a few hours of shopping through shoddy looking MTECH models it's nice to see a fitting model that won't break the bank! Thank you!

It depends on what you want from your knife. If you want an aggressive defence knife, I just got a Spyderco Matriarch 2 wave and it is wicked. But it wont do much good in cutting a sandwich or sharpening a pencil. For an EDC that is a tactical style knife, I would recommend a quality manual knife. a paramilitary 2 is a great knife, but I cant think of any non rescue oriented knives with glass breakers. If a karambit it must be, I'd save up a bit more and get an emerson folding karambit or super karambit. In my experience, the 5.11 knives are money better spent on a kershaw (check out the shallot for an aggresive but useful assisted opening edc knife) , just my , or Spyderco Karahawk in own experience with a 5.11 karambit.Figure out want you really want to do with the knife and how much you will be using it for. 150 bucks can get you a GREAT knife, I personally like spydercos quality and designs, check out their designs, as well as kershaw/zero tolerance, benchmade, and some other companies you will see recommended here. Keep looking at designs, find out exactly what you want, and keep gathering info. good luck!

sorry, I assumed you wanted a folder, and re read your post. For fixed blades, I am partial to a edc of 3-4 inches. Now it a paragon semi skinner in black micarta with a tapered tang. For sheer utility, I'd find the right size Becker for you. Carrying a 5 inch fixed blade karambit could be problematic, or certainly make people uncofortable in some places. Emerson makes a very nice fixed blade 3.2 inch karambit around 240; without getting a custom, I can't think of anything better.

Please don't use your self defense knife to cut cardboard when you get home, then go have a night out on the town only to get mugged and pull out a not as sharp as it should be knife. A self defense knife should only be used as a self defense knife.

benchmade 860 is pretty wicked, has a skull kracker on the back too. i think this knife was originally designed for the security services of some middle eastern country. comes in all black, the satin version is discontinued but can still be found.

a black benchmade 710 is also a good option, its slim and long enough to make a good pocket stick/kobuton in the closed position and its a great all around knife.
