I'm no expert, but it seems to me like this could be an effective tool in a bad situation.

Yea you could ruin someone’s day with it, but you can with an Endura etc too.

I think the Tasman/Harpy, Civilian and Matriarch are the most destructive since they pull in and rip and they lass through tissue.

I heard someone describe the Matriarch (and it’s intended rape defense use) as a “castration hook”...eek

wharncliffes and hawkbills are good for slashing but ineffective for stabbing, but then again I do not intend to use knives for SD. As 91bravo 91bravo said, a pencil or as a matter of fact a rock would get the work done, sometimes resulting in even more severe damages.

It wouldn't be my first line of defense, but is a nasty slashing tool if it were your last stand weapon.

If you put a zip tie wave on it or a wisemen wave mod then it could be feasable. Otherwise they already produce a spear point Delica with a wave that comes stock.

Imho a knife is not an ideal self defense tool and folding knife is not the ideal self defense knife. For a folding knife to be even considered by me for self defense it must have a wave.

Michael Janich likes the wharncliffe for self-defense, and he seems to know a thing or two about it. And yes, every time this is brought up people have to chime in with a gun is better, or pepper spray, or running shoes. It's like clockwork.

These knife self defense threads are like clockwork too. Tell me, how many people do you personally know that have actually used a knife for self defense? If you have to pull a knife for self defense, just hope the other person doesn’t pull a gun. Just sayin’.

For me having a knife for self defense is like not flying because some planes crash. It could happen, but...

One. Girl I knew years ago got grabbed by a dude when she was out somewhere, she manged to get her folder out, slashed the guy's arm, and ran. She didn't carry the folder for self defense or anything, it wasn't a purpose designed "defensive" or "tactical" folder, it wasn't like she engaged the guy in combat with it or anything, but it did allow her to get away and get to help.

I do know one person who used a knife in self-defense, successfully I might add, but that is kind of irrelevant here. The OP's question was not "is a knife a good self-defense tool" or "is a gun better for self defense." It was whether a wharncliffe delica was good for self defense. Answers otherwise are not answering the question.

Whoever says wharncliffes don't stab well, don't know what they are talking about. Even my well used VG-10 wharnie with a slightly rounded tip from steeling it a lot and using it a lot, penetrates with ease. The spine of the blade ramps the edge into what's being penetrated. Plain and simple, and they slash better because more blade stays in the cut, rather than slide off. Do some testing. I'm no expert by any means, but I use this knife almost every day, and Mike Janich knows what he's talking about, for sure. The serrations for SD? Not so sure about that. I'd choose plain edge for that. And to be clear, I choose to not cut anyone, unless it is necessary.

Thanks for pointing that out captain obvious! Of course a wharncliffe Delica will be good for self-defense, anything with a sharp point can be good for self-defense. But like you stated, I will use pepper spray or run away, or even try to hide my family and I, before I use a knife for self-defense. I guess I'm just different in viewing a knife as a tool, just as I do my wrenches and screwdrivers. Different mindsets and different points of view, that's all.

I said that but I did not say wharncliffe wont penetrate or stab. Everything is relative. I was saying it in comparison to other blade profiles like drop point or clip point.

I am sure when enough force is applied we can "penetrate" a hammer into a tree stump.

I am fortunate to live in a state where I am free to carry a gun, if I choose. I choose not to currently, but, if I felt a strong need for a dedicated SD tool, I would. I almost always carry at least one knife. Suitability for SD is not my primary consideration when purchasing knives. However, I am interested in the last ditch, SHTF, SD potential of the various knives I carry for other reasons.
