Demko AD-20.5 in K110 (D2)

The knife is a bit overpriced aus10 or k110 and I am not sure if I will pick one steel over the other. But I guess the price is partly due to the innovative lock and the custom version it is mimicing.
I don't think AD has the high volume production of larger companies .

So far as D2 vs AUS10 , if the HT is top notch , either one is OK ...neither is my favorite .

D2 supposed to be less "stainless" .

It's going to depend on heat treatment. Some D2 is really bad and some is really good. I'd like to be charitable and assume Demko does it well, but I'd rather they do a good job on something like CPM CruWear for that money.

I've never handled a Demko AD-20.5, but the clips keep catching my eye. To me, the price seems off for tool steel and plastic. If they release an upgraded steel at the current price point, I'd be all over it. Some micarta scales would be the next purchase.

I saw this too, and I just picked mine up as well last week (BHQ/Jade). I'm not really concerned about the steel difference, but my initial thought because of the two locations in which I live (PNW/FL) is that I'm fine with a little extra corrosion resistance. Plus I wanted the Shark's foot version anyway. I'm just glad there are more of these getting out there, and the additional color options are a good sign. I'm fine with plastic myself, and the reason I'm happy with the jade is because of dying options. I hope to do mine this weekend. I still intend to grab a 20 at some point, so then I'll have one with better steel and a clip point.

Here is some thought. Instead of this version that is smaller than AD20, I'd prefer to see an XL version that is larger than AD20 (4"+ blade) with g10 scales and a better steel (cruwear or 20 cv); steel liners would be fine. I won't mind paying $250 for it.

If AD was still at Cold Steel with LCT at the helm , something like this might have happened . :(

Just saw these on knifecenter's new arrivals page. Of course it happens like a week after I buy a 20.5.

What do y'all think, is D2 a step up from AUS10A?
I don’t know how many folders with D2 blades I currently own, but I only had one with AUS10, and its 5.5”….not something I use very often. So even if D2 had been an option, out of curiosity I still would have went with AUS10.

*add …In fact, this knife also allows me to mess around with a couple different things…blade shape I’m not real familiar with, a new lock, as well as a Demko brand knife.

Here’s a funny thing: I used to have an AD20 in 20CV and sold it .... something about not getting comfortable opening it.

Got a 20.5 Sharksfoot to try and _love_ it. Very comfortable knife ... and I like K110 (Austrian D2), and do support Taiwan ... so thanks, OP, just ordered one :)

And regarding price, it’s not far off - say - a PM3 exclusive, but it’s a much better knife, IMHO.

By my knowledge D2 aren't better than AUS-10
But they are different for sure
So purely your choice, your preferences

I remember reading somewhere that D2 has both better edge retention and toughness than AUS-10,

I remcall a D2 Dozier that did not feel sharp to the touch but would pop and fling thin light arm hairs into the air when shaving the arm in contrast an Ontario RAT fixed blade knife in D2 that I had would not get anywhere near shaving sharp no matter what I did to it giving credit to the the saying that D2 takes a dull edge and holds it forever.

My point is I just don't know what to expect with D2 I have seen other D2 blades that take great edges and others that I hate.

I have a Jerry Stark straight razor in D2, believe it or not, that does not feel as smooth as other blades such a Filarmonica when shaving but does a fantastic job regardless. It also strops as good and fast as any other straight razor I have used.

I couldn't resist I ordered the D2 AD20.5 so I will find out how good the heat treat/edge retention is.

I got it in the mail it's sharp that much I can tell. I have not used it yet. Hopefully there will be more to come.

I cant' help but wonder if the more slashing cutting oriented shark foot version (sheeps foot) would be the most beneficial design for the use of a steel like D2. I don't know it's a toss up as far as I am concerned. Why no shark foot in D2? I can only guess that maybe they chose to go with the drop/clip point version because it's more popular.

I read that D2 is hard to machine for blade smiths. I would guess it's also rough on almost any tooling except maybe lasers or water cutters?

I don't have either, but Jared from Neeves Knives (Youtube) claims that Demko's AUS10 isn't great. I tend to trust him because otherwise he's a big Demko fan and he's a good knife sharpener.

Mine with K110 D2 arrived extremely sharp. Almost on par with my Spydercos with maxamet. I have other blades with D2 that sharpen up great and with TI scales I like it more than the AD20 I had with 3v.
