I wonder how I haven't thought of trying it so far ???? I found in shop this unfinished knife.I think somewhere is another one same as this one so i can practice on both. Finish on bevels was 40 grit on fairly new belt so pretty rough surface .I forget to take picture before i start to sand bevels but i will take on other one .....
What to say ? After ten minutes sanding on one side i have mirror finish.I have only 800 grit DMT so that is what i used .I will order asap 400 grit and 1000-1200 whatever is out there... Finish from 800 grit DMT ............. well it is not the same as finish on 800 grit sandpaper ...not even close .Not even close to 1500 grit sandpaper .This shines like a mirror, hard to discern an individual lines .I guest that because diamonds are many , many times harder then ceramic grits and they cut clean .That is good thing , bad is that DMT will show even the slightest imperfection....crazy ! But they remove material fast and will clean all uneven surface....I try little to sand with 800 grit paper after diamonds and after that DMT show how sandpaper don t leave even surface....This is planer blade T1 HSS steel and have some strange line in steel so i must clean flat part of blade .....almost done one side , edge on spine now cut paper .What i can t do is to show on pictures or on video is that line between bevels and flat part ....crazy line !! I never so far have success get to get that kind of sharp clean and distinct line , never .
I don t know how this would work on bigger knife say on kitchen knife ? Lot of surface will show some things we don t like to see and to make them gone will need more work .........
So what do you think ? Has anyone tried it so far?
I will insert some picture later ...this ones I have not show what I see

I'd be curious to see how long those stones hold out fulfilling such a task, and whether or not the related costs will be similar to sand paper.

I use my Atoma diamond plates to clean up flat grinds and polish flats all the time, as you noted it keeps the transitions CRISP.

I have eight ...all 800 grit and all are small, 100 x 20mm .I need one BIG and more small in other grit !

Seems to me that Atoma are better choice then DMT ? I like to order this one , what do you think ? 400 grit and 200 x 75mm ?

PS . I used so far pure water , water with a few drops of dish soap, window cleaner.............you know what works best for me ? Antifreeze ...used in the radiator of a motor vehicle ....
Just a few drops and you can sand long time ...and it stay where we need it.Works with sandpaper to and no rust on carbon steel....

My Atoma plates definitely seem to be more aggressive than DMTs and are holding up really well. I have 8"x3" in 140/400/600/1200, the 400g is a great all-around one that cuts fast but leaves a nice finish.

I've used a diamond lapidary disk for a similar task. Haven't done much with them, but the little I did went very well. I don't know for sure, but the plating on them seems more durable than on the sharpening plates. Plus they're cheaper.

I use diamond files for refinishing all the time. WD 40 works well with diamonds.
Cheap Japanese waterstones work very well, too!

I don't know if they will last forever.. I've certainly burned through a few extra coarse stones rather quickly. My old DMT stones were amazing but I feel like they are cutting corners these days.

Regardless, I'm digging that leuku blank!

I got couple of those cheap small diamond stones used for sharpening, used them on becut which was really shit to hand sand with paper. I stripped the diamond grit quickly, but i would like to try quality stones if they last longer. Quality diamond stones are €€€ though..

Ok , this thing work ....When I stop sanding with diamond finish look ugly , weird .I don t know how to explain what I see . I try several way with diamonds and I can not get good looking finish . But then .......I have some denim glued on piece of flat walnut which i use for stropping edge .Little ordinary polish paste and after several minutes ......I get this .Almost mirror finish . It is not finished yet ,now edge is like dull knife . I will use diamond till I sharpen blade , no secondary edge on this one .I cut tonight one blank from M42 steel to see how diamond would work on that thing.......it s over 67 hrc

That looks good, I also like the diamond paste for finishing. Denim is a good idea for stropping, i can imagine that it holds paste better then leather.

I didn t use diamond paste Fredy ............I need to order that thing asap .I used this one on picture . I think you are familiar with that polish paste ........ It clean this blade very fast , which is impossible for me to do that with that polish paste after sandpaper finish on same steel . Once i make mistake and i mirror polished blade / 12 cm long / in M2 steel .It is endless job and at the end it look like skin , like it is sandblasted with some extremely fine grit .I mean it is mirror finish but simple you see something like dots ,probably they are carbide which sandpaper can t cut .....I think that I understand what is going on with diamonds .They are extremely hard and extremely sharp and they make extremely clean cut .AO is simple not enough sharp and hard to do that job on high wear steel with lot of carbide . That is the reason that finish with 800 grit diamonds look like mirror...I try this polish paste after sanding with fine sandpaper and it take to much tame to see some progress ....I will never again try that with sandpaper on HSS steel.Sandpaper work and it work fast on simple steel like 52100 and you can get whatever finish you want fast .
I think that I will bite the bullet and I will buy that MF .....CBN belt .Not so far ago I learn that price on that kind of belts go with grit size ....40 grit 2 x 42 is to much expensive , over 500 euro .........BUT 80 or it was 100 grit cost half of that ............And not so far ago I learn that 100 grit ceramic belt work excellent on high speed ....

I know that paste from my dad's garage, used it on aluminium bicycle parts but not on knives yet :)

Yeah, using them as a full time option to sand hss will be a fairly expensive exercise, they definately don't last forever.

How are these diamond stone holding up? Any updates?
I make only one more knife since then on which i use diamond .......I have no doubt that they will last forever if used properly. Wait , I forgot ......I have finished blade on other one also mirror finish ....T3 HSS steel both .
