Yep... After all these years of collecting Case and Schrade slip joints, I finally got my first Buck slip joint
I was going to buy one anyway, but Santa brought it, so now I can get something else to go with it.
Its a charcoal 301. I haven't hardly put it down since I unwrapped it.
The size is perfect imho. The only faults I can find with the knife, is a VERY small gap between two of the back springs. The blades are smooth on opening, but don't have very strong snap. With a little cleaning and oil, I would guess they will snap a little better. Its not really a problem I'm just use to knives with stronger springs.
The main pet peeve I have is "Pin Show". In the past, I've never kept a knife that showed up with this issue, and really don't think there is any reason that it can't be remedied. However, it is purely an aesthetic issue for me because I'm very anal about things. I knew from all the pictures I've seen, that most Buck slip joints have this, so I wasn't surprised to see it.
This is the first knife I will be keeping that has pin show. I like it way to much to return because of a little thing like this.
Almost forgot, all three blades will shave very nicely
I've never been a big fan of the stockman patterns, because with only 2 springs, the blades are crammed into the knife at an angle, and usually rub against each other.
The Buck with 3 springs eliminates this. I love it.. All the blades sit straight, and are easy to get ahold of to open. I really think other companies should use the three spring setup, its a great idea. Besides, I have big hands, and the little extra width in the knife makes it very comfortable in hand.
The other bonus with this knife, is the leather pocket sheath. Very cool
Although I probably won't use it much, its a nice extra that I have never seen another production slip joint come with.
I don't often get new knives, most of mine are older and pre owned, but of the ones I have bought, this is the most excited I've been about a new knife.
After getting this one and inspecting it, there will be a few more Buck slip joints coming home in the near future...
