Difference between spyderco fine and ultra fine stone

Considering of buying ultra fine stone, already own fine one. Wondering how drastic is the difference between those two; is UF worth the money?

I think my DMT Extra fine (1200 grit) does just about as good as the Spyderco Ultra fine. Your call depending on the method of sharpening you use. Keep em clean and they pack up pretty quick.

DMT Fine is 600grit, EF is 1200, EEF is 8k. EEF and UF are pretty similar to my understanding but the UF will leave a more polished edge and the EEF will leave more of a toothy edge. From what I've read up on these anyway, I don't own the UF or EEF.

As for fine vs UF, as you move up in the grits you notice less and less of a difference. How much so I can't say as I don't own any of those stones or the DMT EEF.

Its a pretty big difference. The fine is around 2500, I use it as my next step above my DMT extra-fine (1200). The UF spyderco is ~10k and is a very very large jump up. Fwiw the extra-extra fine DMT is 8k (and they did a limited run of "medium-extra fine" that was 6k)

I had a hard time believing it too because in "the grand unified grit chart" it's listed as lower but I've been assured by some of the more knowledgable members here that it is in fact ~10k, there was a thread just recently but the search function is apparently not working today.

We've had this before and as the link in #6 gave the information. Sal, has stated on here that the two stones are the same grit. The Ultra fine is just finished/ sanded finer. Only around 1500 (ANSI) found in Spyderco's chart http://users.ameritech.net/knives/grits.htm
Perhaps performing finer as I purchased the fine stone in the blue plastic holder and leveled mine. Thus, sanding it finer and it feels and gives a very fine edge finish. DM

I love the Spyderco UF stone and you will be very surprised with the finish you can get going from the fine to ultra fine. Not only will it yield a close to perfect mirror sharp edge but it's a great stone to maintain an edge with that has been pushed past were just a strop alone can fix. The two pictures below are from an old post of mine. But you can see what can be achieved when going from the fine stone to ultra fine.

Is only jump between those edges fine to UF, or did you use any other stone in between the two?

Can I 'polish' spydercos stone with sand paper? Just recently bought 1200 mesh paper that is suitable for steel polishing. Or should I use diamond instead?

Nothing in between. That's going from fine to ultra fine.

Sandpaper won't touch these. I tried it with SiC wet/dry paper (harder than AlOx), and it was like rubbing smooth glass against smooth glass. No discernable swarf or dust removed from either of them. Diamond is the only thing I've seen that can do it (CBN should work also, though I haven't tried that). And even that will take a while, with a lot of elbow grease.

Yes, I did mine with a used coarse diamond stone. Then on to a fine diamond. Now that coarse diamond stone is done for. So give some thought toward a diamond stone replacement before doing it. DM

I have an old cheaper than dirt diamond sharpener that I could sacrifice for this. I leveled lansky's super sapphire hone with this same ctd diamond sharpener back in past, so I guess it would be good try on spyderco F stone.

From what I can remember the Spyderco Fine and UF stones are a form of synthetic sapphire, very hard stuff. I also remember reading that the only real difference between the fine and UF is the way they are finished, they are made of exactly the same thing.
Which would indicate that if you were to cause wear on the fine it would smooth out a bit, but I think that might take a (long) while.

if you get the spyderco uf heres a tip for keeping her clean get some ceramic stove cleaner she will be white as snow in abought 1 min.i mostly use naturals these days but the spyderco works just fine

I tried finding numbers on the UF rods for the SharpMaker. I do not think they are 10,000 but they do polish an edge.
