I'm going down to VA Beach on Saturday from Vermont. I want to avoid some traffic if possible. There appears to be two routes I can take. One takes me down through the New Jersey Turnpike kind of hugging the coast.

The other option is down to Binghamton NY and taking 88/81 down to 95. That takes me into the Capital Beltway.

Mapquest says that the times are within about an hour, either way I go. Which one is the easier drive? One hour is kind of irrelevant, but I hate driving in a lot of traffic, being a Vermont boy.

Stick to the Garden State Parkway and then take the Cape May/Lewes Ferry into Delaware and follow Rt. 13 down into virginia Beach. You'll save an hour and the ferry is a cool trip.

KV is right, the ride through DE/MD/VA is pretty uneventful, and should be great this weekend, except for pending bad weather.

Another alternative would have been to continue on I-81 down to there it connects with I-64 around Staunton, Virginia, and then taking I-64 Southeast to Virginia Beach. This takes you up the Shenandoah Valley, some of Virginia's most beautiful country and then across the Blue Ridge at Charlottesville and thence throught he Piedmont past Richmond down into Tidewater.
