Wasn't that Mark Wahbergs character in "Boogie Nights"?
Not quite. =)

he uses anything you want. if its not a custom order then it was probably S30V or if an older one 154I had a chance to buy one of Dirk’s Custom Claw Knives on the weekend. But I hesitated after doing a check on the web I couldn’t pin down what steel was used.
One site said S90V, another said S30V and another said 154CM.
Does anyone know what steel he did use or if it was various steels?
Thanks guys.

should have picked it up they are great

Since it was second hand I wasn't sure if the seller was ripping me off or not. Anyway Dirk said from the photo I took it was probably an S90V model. He confirmed he has made them in all 3 steels.
In hindsight I probably should have grabbed it to have as a sample. But it looks like we will get him to do a short run with carbon fiber scales.
really? that's cool!! are you saying a small run for a retail? or for a group buy here?
he has changed the design of the "claw" a bit from my older one. I was gonna grab mine and take a pic for here but forgot it in the mad rush this morning. the newer version has "wing" like protrusions off the finger hole that I don't really care for . make sure you ask to see what he has in mind because I know the one you ran across had to be the original version
one thing that's great about his La griffe claw design is the blade is "tilted" slightly back which brings the point in line with the middle of the hand/hole. this means you get the benefits of the claw and you also can "poke and stab" like a more traditional blade shape and still keep your wrist and forearm in alignment. Its a wicked little blade. way way better than the emerson la griffe .
yup that last one is like mine which is S30V . I did my own handles for it. Dirk does a good job on scales and it only ups the pricing about 15 bucks. It would be for retail sales. My business is located in Australia, plus I'm not registered as a dealer here, so it's a bit difficult to run a Group Buy on the Blade Forum. We do run them on our local knife forum. Our short run will be ten pieces to start with.
Dirk tells me he is gearing up for the SHOT Show already, so his lead time is four months at the moment. I see your point about the design change. I prefer the older design as well.
He did send me this photo but I think it was to show the different handle types he can do. The original Claw is below which is the one I saw at the show.
