Are any of you familiar with Dirk Pinkerton? For those of you that have purchased knives from him I'd liked to hear your thoughts on the quality of his work.

He used to be a moderator on the DDR/HTM forum, never really posted much. I vaguely recall he made a couple small pieces (arrowhead with a finger hole that was chisel grind), but he never really showed much or participated other than that. I don't know if he was just too busy with whatever he was doing, forums weren't his thing, or he just didn't really make much other than what little he showed or discussed. When I participated in that forum, I do recall he received encouragement to start suggested products, but nothing ever came of them aside from a couple posts with not much to show for it. Short answer, who knows.

Haven't heard that name in a while.

I felt bad for him that he got saddled with that POS, Darrell Ralph.

I met Dirk at Blade 2013, he seemed like a nice guy and the few fixed blades he had seemed nice and fairly priced.

I had a chance to buy one of Dirk’s Custom Claw Knives on the weekend. But I hesitated after doing a check on the web I couldn’t pin down what steel was used.

One site said S90V, another said S30V and another said 154CM.

Does anyone know what steel he did use or if it was various steels?

Thanks guys.

He has done/has been doing a lot of design work for Kizer. I have a Rogue, it's a great knife that is very Dirk w/ it's stout wharnie blade.
I don't know anything about the guy or the consistency of his customs as I've never had or held one. His designs are solid besides that.

I have about 5 knives directly from Mr. Pinkerton. He is still making custom knives and his prices are very reasonable . the work is top notch. he does some really good no nonsense SD designs I am addicted to them. heres a cpl I ordered from him. NitroV steel they ran about $120 plus shipping.

I have a claw design in S30V that is a wicked little blade. better than an Emerson La griffe . longer blade and v grind.

go to his website and send an email. he will respond quickly . he will work with you personally on the knife you want. not bad for the prices. he just doesn't have a huge presence out there

he uses anything you want. if its not a custom order then it was probably S30V or if an older one 154

should have picked it up they are great

Since it was second hand I wasn't sure if the seller was ripping me off or not. Anyway Dirk said from the photo I took it was probably an S90V model. He confirmed he has made them in all 3 steels.

In hindsight I probably should have grabbed it to have as a sample. But it looks like we will get him to do a short run with carbon fiber scales.

really? that's cool!! are you saying a small run for a retail? or for a group buy here?

he has changed the design of the "claw" a bit from my older one. I was gonna grab mine and take a pic for here but forgot it in the mad rush this morning. the newer version has "wing" like protrusions off the finger hole that I don't really care for . make sure you ask to see what he has in mind because I know the one you ran across had to be the original version

one thing that's great about his La griffe claw design is the blade is "tilted" slightly back which brings the point in line with the middle of the hand/hole. this means you get the benefits of the claw and you also can "poke and stab" like a more traditional blade shape and still keep your wrist and forearm in alignment. Its a wicked little blade. way way better than the emerson la griffe .

It would be for retail sales. My business is located in Australia, plus I'm not registered as a dealer here, so it's a bit difficult to run a Group Buy on the Blade Forum. We do run them on our local knife forum. Our short run will be ten pieces to start with.

Dirk tells me he is gearing up for the SHOT Show already, so his lead time is four months at the moment. I see your point about the design change. I prefer the older design as well.

He did send me this photo but I think it was to show the different handle types he can do. The original Claw is below which is the one I saw at the show.

yup that last one is like mine which is S30V . I did my own handles for it. Dirk does a good job on scales and it only ups the pricing about 15 bucks.

I have wanted to try one of those like the middle one

4 months he is busy . its a one man show.

Looks like we'll also be getting the "Claw XLRT" in 154CM and Carbon Fiber scales, the tiny "Dashi" in S90V, Elmax and Todd Nichols stainless Damascus and the "Subtle Wharning" in Elmax also with Carbon Fiber scales.

Claw XLRT

Dashi

Subtle Wharning
