Specifically, a Crunch, but same for any of the tools with the almost-round bolt (?) heads with small serrations around the outside rim, like the original PST, the Micra, etc. Are these just bolts? If I get pliers or something on each side, will they unscrew? Is the shank a standard size so a more normal bolt could replace it for reassembly?

I agree. Before you hurt yourself or someone else, you might see what the factory can do for you. As far as I know Leatherman tools are guaranteed.

Pfffffttt to the warranty and the party poopers. Modding your tool is fun and easy!

Own your tools.

To answer your question; yes those round things are a screw and bolt assembly that can be undone with two channel-locks. I recommend heating the tool for a few minutes before unscrewing them as they are sealed with locktite and are damaged easily.

Now, I was unable to find a common size at the hardware store to replace the screws but I may check some specialty stores this weekend.

Also, there are different size washers at different points on various tools. Make sure you pay attention when removing the tools from the handles.

I had to take apart my pawnshop PST to give it a through cleaning.

Here's a cheap Blast that I married to a Kick. Here's the result. I love this tool now.

If you have any questions let me know. I've had a few of the newer tools apart (Kick, Blast) for modding purposes.
Now, there is a certain amount of overlap between Multi-tool companies. I currently working on a chart but, for example, some SOG implements fit Gerber tools, some Bear MGC implements fit Leatherman tools and so forth.

Thanks, also found a couple of threads here and here that go into this, with basically the same result. I want to remove the knife blade. While I'm at it, I may see if a PSTII scissors set will fit...

Hmmm........ putting a disassembled multi on a nice porcelain dinner plate.

Looks like a heavy meal to me:D

hehe, I hope the wife doesn't see this, or I'm gonna get an earful.

Seriously though, I have a question; Will replacing the washers in between the tools with bronze/brass ones make the tool work better in terms of accessing them?

Been thinking of doing a mod on an old Juice a friend gave me.

Well, this is working out great! The PSTII scissors probably won't work without a bit of work - I might look for something in the Blast/Fuse family as a donor. Pending replacement with another tool, I ever so slightly thinned out 2x 5mm stainless washers as a spacer and have on a possibly permanent basis replaced the factory screw with an rounded allen-head 10-32x3/4" stainless screw, which makes a great replacement for the factory screw. I need to thin out the nut that's on the other end.

Has anyone tried putting the scissors from a PST II on a PST? I would like to replace the old style Phillips and flat screwdriver on my old PST and while I am at it replace the awl with the scissors. For me, the original PST with the sharply pointed blade is nearly ideal, but the scissors would be more useful than the awl. Any information would be most helpful. Thanks.

Not exactly... but I started a similar project. I put a PST blade and a Kick pocket clip on a PSTII. The clip is a bit loose so I may replace it. I also replaced the pins with standard pins. I may also replace the small driver with the awl from the PST. I haven't finished the project -- I got side tracked.

Supratentorial,

Kind of the opposite of what I want to do! Where did you get the hex head screws to replace the standard Leatherman screws? I would probably do the same.

I realize that this reply is a little late (2007!!) but today I was emailed the same question with a link to this post. I used the bolts from a SOG Pocket Power Plier. I had the parts already. You might email www.sogknives.com to see if they could sell the parts to you. Years ago, I emailed SOG for some parts and they were very helpful. Alternatively, a store that sells knife making supplies might have something similar. Some of the knife makers on this forum might have the parts... or maybe a hardware store like http://www.fastenal.com or http://www.mcmaster.com/ or http://www.grainger.com/

Hope that helps.
