Discontinued Buck "Fisherman" Model 121

As I am an avid "North Country" fisherman and have used a pair of Buck fillet knives, model 122, for a number of years (with great satisfaction), I have also owned (and never used) a, now discontinued, "Fisherman" Model 121 and am puzzled as to its blade design and intended use. Was the 121 intended as a general purpose Fish Camp Knife such as the Randall model 7 and model 10 or the Case XX Finns or was it designed to actually fillet larger fresh and saltwater fish?

Thank you,

Bob Witt

Sounds "on-topic" to me, Bob! Welcome to BF/Buck!

DarrylS and others here are avid fishermen; unfortunately, the only thing I know about fish is that Gorton's Garlic Butter Fillets need to be microwaved on "high" for 4 mins 30 secs each side (with a small pat of butter on top)... ;)

Bob,

I recently aquired a 121 "Fisherman". The blade is thinner than the 105 and 102 I have (see the pic below). I don't know what Buck intended its use to be, but I would say that it would be an ideal knife for cleaning and filleting small to medium sized fish, as well as for light camp chores.

I prefer a more flexible blade for filleting than the 121's blade. The majority of the fishing I do is in the Pacific. The 121 is small for salmon, halibut and cod but would be work well for the smaller rock fish I pull in.

You mention the 122 as a Buck fillet knife you have used. I have a 122/124 Nemo/Frontiersman, but I wouldn't consider it a fillet knife. It's no doubt a different knife you refer to than the model I have.

There was a thread recently on Buck Knives used for fishing, check back a couple of pages and you should be able to find it.

Here's a couple of pics. The first fillet knife is one I handled from a Swedish blade, added for kicks......(the pattern on the blade is just a reflection)

...LMBO...What more do ya really need to know Trax??...:p...I do a lot of fishin' but as the broken record says...I don't do fixed blades either...At least when it comes to Bucks...I've caught bluegills, walleyes, bass of many kinds, muskie, and northern pike many more types of fresh water fish. I just started in on the saltwater stuff since I moved to Florida. I use a small 4 1/2 inch Rapala for the panfish and most walleye, I use a larger 6 incher for the larger fish with no problems at all. Lotsa flex and super sharp. The saltwater stuff is a different matter. Their rib cages seem to be made of steel wire......This is where the stiffness of the Bucks would come in handy. I use an OLD 11 inch butcher knife that has to be 50 years old and is STIFF but holds a razor edge. I may look into the Buck line for these bruisers, to retire that OLD no name butcher knife...:)

I dont have alot to contribute bout the 121, it did have a scaler on the back of the blade years ago, but I just wanted to say that I like you already ;) The 122 is AWESOME!
I will dig out a "couple pics" of mine ;) You're alright! :D

The 122 is the Ultimate fillet. made in the early 80's possibly? Its the same as a 123 Lakemate only it has a wood handle, they are sweet BTW. ;) (IMHO)

...Oh geeez...Another one to keep my eyes open for......I think those Bucks would do great on the saltwater beasties around here...:p

Those fillet knives are real nice looking. Do the blades have plenty of flex?

DarrylIS....I'm holding the 121 in my hand. I can flex the blade, but not enough to be considered a fillet knife, IMO. It would be ideal for cleaning fish or making that initial cut behind the gills that I now do with a bait knife before picking up a fillet knife to finish....did that make sense?, no, oh well.

I think you need both the 121 and the 122 and .......

trax.....what kinda knife do you use to open up the box of Gorton's?..;)

An Italian stiletto w/black linen Micarta scales...but the blade gets all boogery from opening boxes...I'm waiting for that 3rd Buck 442 to replace it as box opener...:thumbup:

...So Jim...The 122 has the, apparently, more flexible blade???

Yeah the 122 has alot more flexible blade. I used to use a 121 for ducks and small game, I liked it for rabbits too. Then I bought a 110, and a 192 and... :D

The 122, 123, and 125 I need for the fishing I do up here...
The 121 would slaughter the 'eyes I catch ;) The knife is either too big or the fish too small?
